An issue that holds its cards close to its vest, #8 does not present too many new twists and turns for those familiar with the original "Homecoming" arc of Amazing Spider-Man, but it is the motivation behind Mary Jane's choice that compels the reader further. This issue frustrates. Its still well drawn and the characters don't make me cringe when I read the word bubbles. But there are some big issues. Why doesn't Mary Jane recognize Venom? How come Venom is 'evil'? Some of the moments in this comic are like being at a B horror movie. I'm standing up yelling at the stupid character, only to realize I'm invested. And isn't that good?

Liz Allan bamboozles MJ into accepting the Venom symbiote a bit too easily. The fastest way to get your "Venomized MJ" story started is to make MJ a total idiot, and I'm afraid that Gerry Conway and Ryan Stegman didn't stray too far from that sad path. The good news is, aside from disappointing characterization, this is an excellent comic. The visuals are particularly impressive and this storyline promises to deliver plenty of memorable action. If only it weren't dependent on forcing MJ to carry the Idiot Ball!
