Amazing Spider-Man #4

Slott has started the gears that will drive us into Spider-Verse this issue. He accomplishes to address all the known and hidden plot lines in one issue. Slott works magic with Silk and creates a character that we'll fall for rather she's good or evil. I'll go on record to say that this art team is the Marvel dream team. Ramos' art is top notch. I'll never get sick of his work. Or the way he draws peter/Spider-Man. I really enjoy his character designs for Silk, her costume is pretty rad. I hope he sticks with Slott on this book for a while. I think he is doing some of the best work of his career on this Superior Spider-Man " Amazing Spider-Man run. Read Full Review

This is a great comic and the best issue of Amazing Spider-Man in this volume so far. There is a level of excitement akin to the issues of Superior Spider-Man here, and I'm excited to see more of this new character and Peter interacting in the future. Issue four is so far the strongest issue of the series which has made good use of their one issue tie in to push the series forward and it goes without out saying that Humberto Ramos' art is topnotch. I fully recommend this issue to you as it's easy enjoyable read both in terms of writing and visually and has introduced a fresh new character. Read Full Review

As if you couldn't tell already, I really enjoyed this issue. I'm glad that comic creators are becoming more diverse with some of the biggest names in the superhero genre and I look forward to seeing more of it from here on out. Furthermore, I'm also excited to see how things progress with Spider-Man and Silk as things move from 'Original Sin' to 'Spider-Verse'. I'm really interested in seeing where this goes. It was one thing to expect a Spider-Man counterpart who would either rival or complement him. I didn't expect a mutual attraction, even with Parker's relationship with Mary Jane Watson currently on hiatus. That could become a permanent thing now, and that spices things up considerably. Where all of the Original Sin tie-ins for the most part have been fun, a lot of them feel like they can be carried or dropped after the event is out of the way, few of them really feeling like essential reading. The events started by Dan Slott in Amazing Spider-Man #4 however cannot be painted with that same brush. There's no great drama to be had here, but it's a fun issue with a quick pace, and one that will likely worth something down the line when Silk inevitably becomes a permanent Marvel character in her own right. Whether that's as a hero, a villain, a sidekick, a lover, or a hater, only time will tell. This is a strong debut though and I look forward to getting to know her in the issues to come. Wonderful story mostly revolving around Silk's origin. Her being involved in Spider-Man's origin is a nice setup. We catch up briefly with Black Cat, one of the antagonists in this opening arc. Could Silk and Spider-Man form a new partnership, taking the place of the one Spider-Man had with Black Cat? Or could she turn out to be a new foe? We have to keep reading to find out. This is not an issue to jump into the Amazing Spider-Man line with. If you haven't read any of the three previous books in this volume, or read any of the Original Sin line, or read or aware of the events the Peter/Doc Ock brain swap, this issue can be really confusing (Ed: Not to mention early 2000's AMS from J. Michael Straczynski & John Romita Jr ~ Deep Dive Dave). This isn't necessarily a knock against the events in this comic, but it is a viable concern to readers that might want to jump into this book. Amazing Spider-Man, in my opinion, has been really good ever since Peter came back, (and most of Superior was good too), so I would recommend finding issues 1-3 before delving into this one. The Verdict Amazing Spider-Man sets the stage for the next mega Spidey Crossover, and will most likely keep the kids happy with the teen romance. Spider-Verse is coming, but honestly, I'm more excited about the return of Jessica Drew to her own ongoing book than the debut of a new Spider-Girl-Like character. Jessica Drew. There's a lot stuffed into this issue, and even though it's marked as an Original Sin crossover issue, the OS material takes up about four pages in the early stages of the book, with the bulk of our story leaping into getting Cindy Moon out of her jail cell and into Spider-Man's arms. I enjoy the depth that Slott gives to Cindy and her story, but both the rapidity of her introduction and lingering questions about how long she's been locked in Ezekiel's basement make for odd pacing, and the ending is shocking in bad ways as well as good. All in all, Amazing Spider-Man #4 is a pretty good issue overall, as it introduces a character who might be very important in the long run, but does so in a Cliff's Notes manner, and even the fact that I don't care for the art team doesn't torpedo my enjoyment. Humberto Ramos is what saves this book from being a mess. His work is very suitable for a Spider-Man comic in it's bright and stylized visuals. The sense of exaggeration in the character's faces and their actions makes the book more fun and lighthearted. But he also presents the antagonist as foreboding through this long shadows and the regalityof his environment. Read Full Review

The Bottom Line: The Original Sin event does not necessary hijack Spider-Man's ongoing series, but it does seem to cause a swerve. Slott & Ramos are as good as ever, but there is a bit of narrative heavy-handedness to make things fit. Read Full Review

As left, Dan Slott and Humerto Ramos' "Amazing Spider-Man" #4 has a whole lot of wasted potential with a character that simply does not live up to her hype. It serves as a tie in to the Original Sin story but fortunately they keep Dan Slott in control rather than hand the reigns over to Jason Aaron for this issue. Silk is finally introduced after being teased for the whole series. Despite having a similar way of gaining powers to Spider-Man Silk has a completely different backstory and this character has peaked my interest so far.

Coby's Top 5 Comic of the Week

I breezed through this one in less than 10 minutes... and that's not a bad thing. It was a really easy, enjoyable read. Silk is a surprisingly fresh and vibrant new character--I'm looking forward to seeing more of her. They also set up some of the upcoming Spider-Verse stuff, so that should be interesting (although, not having read the previous Amazing Spider-Man stories, I was pretty lost on the references...).

I can't get over how boring the return of Peter Parker is. If it wasn't for the interesting story arc on it's way I would have dropped this book by now.

One of the more sporadic issues I've read in a while. Parker's return has been decent so far, but he certainly is not reaching the heights of his superior predecessor.
