This first issue does an awesome job of introducing the reader to the world and building up intrigue and suspense. Chris Condon shows once again why he is a master of Horror Comics with this original story. Giving the reader only what they need to understand what is going on, well being vague about where we are headed builds tremendous suspense. Much of the background of the issue takes the form of a top secret document at issues end. Theres also a menu for Old Joes at the end of the issue. Its a clever addition of atmosphere thats also echoes in the very stylish and moody webpage for the series. The site has a little bit more background on the series and a few ancillary bits. Theres a smart, little bit on that site that allows for readers to submit reports to the fictitious D.O.D. of the series for fan mail. Chris Condon proves his ability to craft all types of comics as he lays the ground work for what seems to be a distinctive horror series in News from the Fallout. The atmospheric story got me from the outset and didn't let go. Adding to the allure is Jeffrey Alan Love's haunting black-and-white artwork, which eerily pairs well with Condon's script. Woah. Super interesting stuff here. Condon's someone that got on my radar with his Daredevil one-shot for Venom War over at Marvel, and made me even more of a fan with his current Ultimate Wolverine series. This is the first indie book I've read from him, which is, arguably, the biggest test for a writer (I definitely plan on reading That Texas Blood at some point). With all of that said, I definitely enjoyed this. It's a relatively quick read, but Condon puts together a simple, yet intriguing, story that's complimented nicely by Love's art. It's definitely stylized, but I think it fits and sets the tone well throughout. Looking forward to what happens next.

Art and style wise this was great but it was really let down with very sparce wording which let all the story be led visually. Im not for or against this type of storytelling but I prefer it when the artist and writer are on the same page. This is in no way a totally negative review as I really did enjoy the art. Hopefully more story will appear in the next issue.......JM
