Five Ghosts #3

Five Ghosts is an incredible tribute to pulp stories that you just cant find anywhere else these days. Baberie and Mooneyham understand the power of comics as a medium and “Five Ghosts” is an epic display of their mastery. They fully utilize their ideas in a way that could never translate to any other medium. Im so hooked I feel dependent on the book. Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray is the best (and the pulpiest) of pulp fiction and while it might be difficult to describe, issue #3 only makes the stakes higher and the world richer. While the entire saga will undoubtedly work wonders in a collected format, it is almost worth getting it every month simply for Chris Mooneyham's idiosyncratic artwork. Mooneyham's style conjures up visions of pulp book covers from the 1930s through 1950s, and maybe even takes the odd visual cue from Indiana Jones every now and then. Perhaps not a point to jump on at, but certainly one that will encourage you to go back and seek out the first two issues. Read Full Review

Overall: This issue was enjoyable, but had some notable flaws. If you’re a fan of pulps or classic literature, than I would suggest running out to find all three issues, but if you aren’t, wait for the trade. It’s worth reading, but would be better in one sitting. Read Full Review

. . $3, 22pgs + 2pg backup. All Ads @ back (break the style spell tho). Well done pulpy covers and design. . . At 22 pages, and for such an impressively styling book, the drop to $3 is generous and surprising. Barbiere is spinning a yarn about yarns and their power, power and curse for Fabian Grey. Mooneyham provides period illustration that transports and mystifies. What an awesome early splash page of the forbidden city, pulp comics style! And later the montage splash is sketchy and monotone, but reminds me of Gene Colan, maybe. The colors or Laura Affe are right on for the work. Background unfolds and plots thickens as enemies and curse descend upon our trio.
