Transformers: Punishment #1

This one-shot will probably slip under a lot of people's radars. Unless you pick up everything Transformers related you might not even realize this exists. This is a great story that explores a darker side to war and does so without compromising continuity, but allows for this to be revisited in one or more of the ongoing series. I've been enjoying The Transformers (Robots in Disguise) since it began its second season and relocated to Earth, however I can't deny that whenever John Barber makes the jump back to Cybertron I'm reminded of how excellently suited he is to the setting. Rife with backstabbing and political unrest, Cybertron is one of the most fascinating elements of the current Transformers landscape and, in Transformers: Punishment, Barber takes the opportunity to explore the remnants of the old Decepticon movement. While this book may not be the best place to start for people looking to jump into the current IDW Transformers continuity, it is setup in such a way that they can still enjoy the ride with familiar characters and some beautifully drawn robots and fight scenes. The true strength of this comic is delving into the post war Cybertron civilization to see how hard it is for anyone to give up old grudges and see how bearing witnesses to such conflicts can affect them in the aftermath. Fantastic art, with a socially conscious story full of political intrigue and mystery. It's good to have Barber writing a Cybertron story again, this is a must read for any Transformers fan and well worth the price of admission both in quality and page count.
