Godzilla #1 is an extraordinary start to the Kai-Sei era at IDW Publishing. Between Tim Seeley's outstanding script and Nikola imeija fantastic illustrations, this debut issue is a thrilling kick-off packed with action and a bit of heart. Though I was a fringe fan prior to reading this issue, I feel Seeley and imeija have officially turned me into a die-hard reader now. Taking the original story, we all know and love, but then infusing it with some deeper and unique elements that make the story feel fresh. The art truly is stunning and the characters really pop, and most importantly Godzilla is awesome and does cool things. The Kai-Sei Era, IDW's new Godzilla Universe, gets off to a roaring start thanks to an engaging script and high-octane art. This debut issue doesn’t shy away from being a Godzilla story – there are kaiju monsters aplenty – but the entire creative team injects the franchise with a fresh, modern take. The art style is a nod to shōnen manga, which will undoubtedly resonate with younger audiences and fans of Japanese pop culture who may not have pulled this book on name alone. While the issue is loaded action, Tim Seeley introduces a cast of intriguing characters with ease. The new G-Force team is well-defined, with each member getting enough story to make an initial impression. Seeley adds another twist to the Godzilla lore with the character Jacen, a G-Force recruit who has acquired the power of Godzilla. It adds a new layer of complexity to the story and raises the stakes of humanity’s attempt to defeat these monstrous threats. I'd love to see more backstory for each character as the series progresses, but for now, I'm hooked. The inter-team dynamics are already starting to show fractures, and I'm eager to see how they play out. The visuals are nothing short of spectacular. Nikola Čižmešija's angular illustrations paired with Francesco Segala's vibrant colors make for quite the combination. Motion is palpable, facial expressions are exaggerated, and Nathan Widick's onomatopoeia lettering creates an additional dimension that makes the visuals leap from the page. It's a truly immersive experience, and I couldn't help but feel like I was right there in the midst of the action. With its fresh take on the Godzilla mythos and absolutely stunning visuals, this series is a must-read whether or not you’re a fan of the franchise. The art is nice but the writing is kinda meh so far. I know Tim Seeley can do better, I love Local Man. I like the plot and setting and all, but the biggest problem is every time the commander opens his mouth it's just cringy and annoying. The stereotype is lazy, bad writing and it takes away from my enjoyment of the book. Not enough to make me hate it, or even rate it low, but it would definitely be higher with better dialogue and writing. I'll definitely give it another issue or two, but if that stuff keeps up I'll probably drop it.

have never been a fan of Godzilla comics (at least not since the 70s Marvel run) … but I read this NEW Godzilla issue one from IDW with a very open mind … and I didn’t like it - not one bit. Godzilla appears in the first 8 pages and then the story turns to the American G-Force … a group of “heroes” with special powers on a mission to stop Godzilla. All this would be fine if the characters were interesting and not goofy weirdos. Things happen, but none of it is given enough time to be interesting, or clever, or worth my time. The writing is very sub-par for Seeley … and the art by Cizmesija is a bit messy and grossly inconsistent … however … the book really fails in the coloring department - everything is too dark and very muddled. I honestly couldn’t tell you what’s happening on the last two pages of the book and I have it sitting right next to me as I write this. I literally forced myself to finish reading it and I’m worse off for it. The thing is … with a team out to destroy Godzilla in a book called Godzilla … that’s not a recipe for success. If you are a fan of Godzilla comics, maybe this is in your wheelhouse. Perhaps I was expecting too much from this book … I was expecting more Godzilla and less silliness. I’m out on this one. more
