For all the Vampi content thats out there; with another to start later this year with Vampirella / Dracula, you may assume that the market is flooded blood red. There's a lot to like here as Vampirella is more situated with the big picture that she's facing and what needs to be done to deal with it, even if it doesn't make too much sense. She's not exactly trusting Book at this point as he's not an unbiased source but she also knows how to get what she needs so she can start working on this mission now that it's become reality. Book has some good material here and I enjoyed seeing more of Bloodwing's downfall. Some elements of this new world were just a little meh, such as Vampirella's main lackey in Prague, but I really liked this world's Vampirella and wish we had more time with her here to establish her better. VAMPIVERSE #2 reveals the big bad villain as a truly existential threat to everything Vampirella stands for. The story keeps the multiple versions of Vampirella straight to tell an action-packed story with minimal confusion or convolution, and the art is good enough to give plenty of visual wow factor with interesting alternatives of the main character. One of the problems with 1st issues in Modern comics is that they generally suck. There’s usually a 1st issue premium charge and because of decompression you probably won’t even what the comic is about by the time the book ends. Unfortunately, that’s my short review of Vampiverse #1. This is the point in my review where I take my arbitary stance that issues 1-2 should have either been combined into a single issue or that the series should have been released as a Graphic Novel. With Vampiverse #2 Thomas and Jeannine give us a fun issue and does the work that the first issue should have. The issue give’s an origin to our villain, Bloodwing. The comic also provides some insight into the “Books” place in the story as well as his Vampirella’s. In addition to the context provided, we meet yet another Vamperella. This one is more Punk and presents a nice contrast to the others. There’s a Spiderverse vibe to this series. Vampiverse isn’t a rip-off but presents a nice contrast to the other Vampi books that Dynamite is publishing. The story doesn’t give us anything original but it is pulling from series that worked in the past and that goes a long way. In Short: Vampiverse #2 is a marked improvement from the first issue and give’s us everything the first installment should have. more
