The character of Red Sonja herself is Gail Simone in comic book form. Strong, clever, funny and defiantly in charge of her own destiny. And those covers by Jenny Frison, beautiful, absolutely beautiful. 2013 has been a great year for Gail Simone's Red Sonja, and here's hoping that 2014 will be just as much fun. While the conclusion to Annisia's story is arguably the issue's weakest point, the overarching theme of the narrative remains as clear as ever: the women of this world are not to be trifled with, no matter how weak they may seem. In an interesting twist of events, it isn't brawn and a sword that save the day. There are different kinds of strength, and Simone emphasizes that more subtle forms of defiance are every bit as powerful as the more obvious. Read Full Review

With a good deal of action, some potent characterization, a great presentation of the themes and tones of the title, some strong art and colorization, this issue proves that this title does possess the capacity to pleasantly surprise. The comic also apparently says farewell to Sonja's loyal bodyguards Nias and Ayla who won't be accompanying the She-Devil on her journey onward (although they do get to kick some ass in their final appearance).
