Superman Unchained #3

This issue was a blast to read. It's not often we can see a new character more powerful than Superman and have it make sense. Scott Snyder is creating an interesting story with this new character and his take on the New 52 Superman fits nicely. With each issue, you can't help but want to see more of Snyder's take on Superman, Lois, Jimmy, Lex...and just everyone. This is a Superman story you can immerse yourself into. Overall, this was a very satisfying issue. Seeing Lois on her own, and not calling Superman for help was nice. Also, readers have to always keep Lex in the back of their head and wonder what he is up to. This issue had great pacing and some of the most beautiful Superman art we have seen. Read Full Review

We all know that Superman always finds a way to win, but his inner dialogue gives off a sense of self-doubt as he is thinking of combat tips that he received from Batman instead of doing what he does best. I'm genuinely excited to see where Snyder and Lee decide to take us because with three issues in, this series is running on all cylinders. Read Full Review

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this issue is the way that it dissects the idea of ‘answered prayers.' Why would we assume that we can transform the will of the divine with our pleas? Isn't it more likely that when a prayer is answered, we have been lucky enough to stumble on the will of god? That we happen to want what the Almighty wants? Why do we preserve this perception that we have the ear of the forces that shape heaven and earth? Is an answered prayer anything more than a losing sight of our own will, and falling in line with the divine plan? The pages of this issue call the illusion of control into question. In “Superman Unchained” #3 we as readers are asked to consider the possibility that nothing is as it seems, and we must question who is pulling the strings behind the events that seem so large that they are almost acts of god. All in all, "Superman Unchained" #3 is another successful installment in the adventures of the most famous Kryptonian. It's not as flashy as the previous issues, but it clearly depicts Snyder and Lee settling comfortably into their story as they make their mark on the Man of Steel. The biggest strength in this issue is the teamwork between Lee and Snyder. Both are great in their own right, but this is the first issue where I felt like they are actually working as a team to support one another and really tell a great story. The words and the pictures are really meshing nicely and I just hope that this title continues down it's amazing path. As far as I'm concerned, this should be Action Comics, and DC should just go ahead and cancel Superman, Superboy, and Supergirl completely. There is simply no need for a Superman family in the New 52. Especially when Clark, Lois, and Lex are written so eloquently in this title. It just makes the other titles look like lesser products. This third issue shows things starting to add up. We still don't quite know what Luthor is up to, but Snyder slows the action down a bit here to set up some serious stakes for Superman, and they aren't just the threat of physical violence at the hands of the series' new (semi)villain character, Wraith. This was an amazing issue, and better than last issue. It had amazing development, and action, as well as great drama, and outstanding dialogue. It also had a bit of mystery to it, with some suspense, and tons of excitement. Due to all this I'd highly recommend this issue, and am really looking forward to the next one. Read Full Review

Jim Lees art is fair to good this issue, but lacks the polish of the last issues. It really shines excels on one page layouts when there is less attention to detail and more on the action. With two powerhouse characters like Superman and Wraith, there tends to be stiffness, but Lee manages to make things a little more kinetic, especially with a lot of standing around. Read Full Review

Even with the shipping delay, the art by Jim Lee has taken a noticeable dip in quality. He does turn in some iconic poses of Superman, but everything in between varies from looking finely tuned to somewhat loose. This is still a good looking book, but it's not as polished as what came before. Also, the design of Wraith is all over the place. He was clearly made to resemble Superman with the blue base and red accents, but the hood and excessive glowing makes him look like Darkseid with a Superman costume on, which I don't think was the intention. This series will most likely read quite well when collected, but at the end of the day decompression wins again! There are interesting elements and changes to Superman going on, but it's all coming at super slow speeds. Hell, we didn't even get the name of this new super man…and he tried to tell us! Moments like that scream, "Okay they're not pulling the curtain back fast enough." Still, it looks good and it's far better than Grant Morrison's run already. Read Full Review

The beautiful art and interesting story are great, but it is still exposition heavy and still contains the decision to make General Lane forget that he wanted Superman to know nothing about his Salt Flats installation. For a series that was so heavily anticipated, there's a disturbing lack of urgency. Introducing a new foe for Superman looks great on paper, but if there's no real challenge or depth, it's a bandaid that covers the biggest problem of all " writing a Superman story that makes people realize how great Superman is. Superman Unchained is a lot like any other Superman story. There are some brains behind something sinister plot, in this case General Lane, and some muscle to execute it, in this case WRAITH. There isn't much in here that doesn't read like a Hulk comic or countless other Superman stories. With the character of Superman being so lifeless there isn't a lot to hold on to here. Good issue, but wish a little more happened. Snyder seems to naturally click a little better with Bats than Supes so far, but its still entertaining.
