Suicide Squad #23

If I could only pick up one DCU offering this month, Suicide Squad #23 is the hands down winner. Despite a decent range of high quality ongoing offerings and a few new exciting books making their debut, not even tough choice. Everything was done right once again. Justice League Verses Suicide Squad was one of the best cross-overs in Rebirth and this issue continues with the aftermath of that as well as the past events of the Suicide Squad series. Anyone who regularly reads Suicide Squadknow it's a consistently excellent read. I have always rated the writing as some of the best around, but have given some issues average scores due to inconsistent artwork. This latest arc is firing on all thrusters. Adding Batman to the mix has not only shown us his strengths, but also highlighted the abilities of certain " sometimes overlooked " members of the squad. Any reader should have been very skeptical about where ‘KILL YOUR DARLINGS' part three would take us. The Suicide Squad have done some crazy things in the past, but to challenge Batman like this? I'm not the biggest Batman reader, but I don't think I've ever seen the guy this pissed and ready to strike back. What could have lost us reignited a need to anticipate the next issue. Not as strong of an issue as the previous few but still shows growth for the team and their darker sides. Despite being staffed with villains, this aint your mommas squad anymore. No more jokes or sweet team building between the members of this new Squad. Read Full Review

At the behest of Amanda Waller (of course), the Suicide Squad goes after Killer Frost--and it's not as simple as leaving a trail of hot pennies for her to follow! Of course, her Justice League of America teammate has to enter the fray, to good effect. For the story, I mean; everyone else takes a pretty good beating. Read Full Review

It continues to be frustrating how little Rob Williams is exploring Harley Quinn's mindset and motivations as new field leader. And El Diablo is more plot device than valid new addition to the team. However, Katana does enjoy some strong scenes as Williams explores her own reluctant role in the Squad. Read Full Review

Based on what I know from this issue, I'd say skip it. I know, I know" It pains me to say that, but I feel like everything you need to know from this issue will be recapped in two weeks. There's really nothing worth sinking your teeth into, and I doubt anything major will unfold from these events. If you do decide to purchase Suicide Squad #23, it'll need to be for one redeeming moment with Batman. Read Full Review

I recommend everyone to stay away from this issue. Skip it and the events depicted here will definitely be summarised in a few lines in the next issue. The art looked bad at times and the dialogue was completely out of character. Read Full Review

The art could've used a bit of finesse but otherwise a strong installment with reason to get the next issue. JLA vs SS was generally evenly matched but here Batman handles them himself?! To be fair it made some sense since Bats had prep time which is his bread and butter. Big Katana character moment. Also, Harley is moving more to intense rather than in stiches. The rest of the Squad was not much more than cardboard cutouts here.

Maybe I am not seeing the endgame here. I don't get why they are coming after batman, especially after the whole Justice League vs. Suicide Squad. It just seems counter productive, but like I said I will see where all this is going with Waller and The People. The art wasn't bad and neither was the story. This arc's ending will make or break the whole arc.

I'm tired of a boring, forulaic, Suicide Squad. Where is the death of Z-List villains? Why am I suppose to care about Frost? When will this book get good? The New 52 Suicide Squad was in no way revolutionary, but it did give me exactly what I wanted when it came to nonsensical violence and dark comedic enjoyment.
