Justice League of America Annual #1

Overall I really enjoyed Justice League of America Annual #1. The story was told really well, it had plenty of action, and the unlikely team up of Lobo and Black Canary make it even more interesting. I really hope Orlando uses this team up again in the future issues. Read Full Review

A story about Lobo's love for space dolphins could easily be absurd and pointless, but Orlando uses it to give the ultra-violent 90s icon a bit of nuance that makes this a very entertaining issue. It's certainly not like anything else you'll read this week. Read Full Review

If one is not a fan of Lobo, this issue could be skipped, I suppose. I honestly wasnt really looking forward to reviewing it, but I found myself enjoying the tale more than I expected to, which is never a bad thing. Read Full Review

There you have it. It took an annual for Justice League of America to get another decent issue. Is it good enough to recommend? No, not really. In the context of JLA, it's an accomplishment. But when compared to the broader spectrum of quality, it's still not very high. If you're going to pick up anything DC this week, there's nothing, and I mean nothing, better coming out than Batman: Creature of the Night #1. It is absolutely exceptional and more than worth your time and money. In conclusion, does this mean I'm going to stop reviewing the main JLA book? Nope. It's still in the middle of a particularly awful arc, and for all we know, this annual is an isolated incident. No, I don't think I'll be done with this book until we get a full arc that's acceptable or it gets canceled. And, I still think the latter is the far more likely option. Read Full Review

I'll make this simple. If you enjoy the humorous juxtaposition of Lobo's love for dolphins, then you'll probably enjoy this issue. If you think Lobo's love for dolphins is stupid and weird, then you'll undoubtedly hate this issue. I lean more towards the "enjoy it" side of the spectrum, but I do feel as if this issue could have been executed a little better. What can I say, it was the sum of all of those wonderfully weird moments that pushed me over the edge. Read Full Review

If you like your Annuals to give you more of what you get from the regular series, here it is.  The regular series is awful and this Annual is more of that awful.  Avoid this at all costs, especially the $4.99 that you will be ripped off buying it! Read Full Review

Orlando somehow wrote one of the worst issues of the series here. The story is overlong, boring, and took a lot more time than it needed to get started. Jones' artwork is mostly unsatisfactory though there are some bright spots here and there. Read Full Review

Sadly, this issue is the epitome of what could go wrong in the pages of an annual. What little character progression there is, feels insincere and the few reveals are played more for laughs than anything series. I wanted more from this spotlight on Lobo, a character I never much cared for in the past, but has intrigued me thus far in JLA thanks to his mysterious deal with Batman.
