Green Lantern #38

It's funny for a book that has a Green Lantern, Red Lantern, The Flash and Star Sapphire that we spend about 2 pages with anyone in costume, and still have fun. Read Full Review

While I wasn't completely a fan of some of the artwork here, I do have to say that I loved this issue with it's slower more intimate story concerning our Green Lantern.  It's not all constructs and peril here Lantern Lovers, what it is should simply be considered a break for us and for the characters involved and man do I love seeing heroes just being people.  It's one thing that I've felt that Green Lantern has been lacking for a long time, so man was it great seeing it here.  Go check it out and have yourself a break with your favorite Green Lantern as he tries to figure out what to do next. This issue of GREEN LANTERN isn't life or world changing. It's just a solid issue showing the reader that Hal doesn't always have to be saving the universe. Sometimes, he just needs to grab a drink with his friends. Venditti does a swell job at giving the reader a solid issue which humanizes Jordan as a character, while reconnecting him with friends and ex-lovers. It doesn't give the reader much to get excited for though and while the overall issue is done extremely well, some readers many find this issue to be filler or something to skip out on. While I may not agree with the dynamic being established between Hal, Carol and Kyle, I still feel that Green Lantern #38 a solid read and provides a much needed character driven issue.  I would have liked to have seen more dialogue from the titular character than Robert Venditti provides, but this issue does finish stronger thanks to the strong writing.  Admira Wijaya's pencils look good overall and does a nice job of visually capturing the emotions of the characters.  Four out of five lanterns. While not filled with the bloated buddy-cop space opera stuff we've come to expect from the title, Green Lantern #38 is still a welcome and much-needed simpler issue to give us and the characters a moment to breathe, assessing their situations, and figuring out where to go next. Green Lantern #38 is the subdued issue that this book needed following the events of Godhead. Venditti doesn’t squander his down time though, taking the time to set-up Hal’s compelling new character arc and leave Hal and Carol’s future in a state of uncertainty and hope. Hal has always been a very confident character and seeing him question his identity feels like a natural next step for his growth. Robert Venditti’s unique take on Hal Jordan shines bright in Green Lantern #38 and if you hoped on for Godhead this issue will warrant your continuing attention. Read Full Review

With Green Lantern Corps, Green Lantern: New Guardians, and Red Lanterns recently being canceled and ending their runs in March, Venditti will have more color coded toys to play with on a consistent basis and that will only make the series stronger going forward. Read Full Review

Admittedly, this trip isn't all you'd think it was cracked up to be - a little too much of it is spent delivering exposition for other series - but the intention is right, and the landing has been stuck correctly. Sometimes some time at home is what you need to clear your head, giving you a chance to breathe with some simpler pursuits. Green Lantern could use a break from some of its rampant mythmaking, to give readers a chance to get reacquainted with the man behind the mask. Read Full Review

Really enjoyed this issue. It's nice to read about Hal instead of Green Lantern for a change. After the events of Godhead, some R&R was definitely warranted. Who knew Hal, Guy, and Barry would walk into a bar and actually lose in a barfight? Also, I find it kinda cold when Carol pretty much rubs it in Hal's face that she's with Kyle and not him because he needs to "discover himself". The man's just helped saved the universe lady, the least you can do is back off. That being said, it'd be nice to see Hal drop by JL hq just to catch up with Supes and Aquaman and maybe even call Bruce a tool again.

I thought the writing was good in this issue. Good story, good premise overall. A good break in action to get to some of the loose ends tied up with Carol. I did not like the art though. It was just way too inconsistent. There were some good scenes like the first few pages of Hal flying through space and Carol was done pretty well, but besides that, most expressions looked off and like I said before, just inconsistent. But Venditti's story definitely saved the day.

I think I needed a story where Hal gets out of the uniform as much as Hal himself did. The intense onslaught of lantern events have worn me down and I really did appreciate a quiet issue like this, even if it was a little predictably sentimental. The art was okay, but could be more refined and consistent. What's with the attitude from the guardians though? Neither Hal nor the Corps need to answer to these bigots anymore, they need to get over themselves.
