DC / Looney Tunes: Harley Quinn/Gossamer #1

My favorite parts were how the writing and art teams came together not just for the main story but also the extra short story, which was done in almost a replicated style of the old school Looney Tunes shorts. Overall,its a fun read, merging the world of the Looney Tunes with the greater DCUniverse. One might expect it to not work, but with the right writer on theright characters, it can, quite easily. Harley Quinn/Gossamer is a comic I figured I would enjoy, but that is still full of surprises. Bringing these characters together, especially with very distinct creative styles, was an exercise in understanding disparate universes and how they could work together. I had some reservations about some of the art, though overall this comic is still entertaining. Im a huge fan of mash-ups, comics-inclusive, and to see how this one played out was a joy. Gossamer may not be an A-list Looney Tunes character, but the writers are able to have a surprising amount of fun with him teaming up with Harley. The fact he doesn't talk pairs nicely with Quinn's persona, who tends to talk a little bit too much for her own good sometimes. Read Full Review

Dave Alvarez's drawing of Harley saves the day. It's unusual in these team ups that the lighter side wins over the deeper story, but in this case it is a ninth inning catch at the fence! Fisch's story makes so much more sense than the throwback "lost dog" movie that Harley is part of in "A Hairy Predicament". Here's hoping Harley and Poison Ivy can swim in deeper waters, and that Bugs Bunny will anchor one of these team-up soon! Read Full Review

Believe it or not its the second half of this title, the shorter back up story, with some great art, that really steals the show here in this book. However, it's just not enough to push it over the top into something I would recommend to anyone, except the biggest of Harley fans. Read Full Review

Overall, Harley Quinn & Gossamer #1, feels like a missed opportunity. The overarching story feels flooded with an unlikely match with even worse chemistry. This does provide a decent number of laughs but its' not enough to save the final product. The redeeming factor of this book, however, is the art. I had no expectations for this comic but walked away from it with a sincere smile on my face. I am not a Harley Quinn fan. I find her to be overrated, annoying and in most cases incorrigible. A broken clock is right twice a day and in this instance, Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Pier Brito knock this one-shot out of the park. Harley meets Gossamer after a Hurricane washes the Monster up on the beach. They become fast friends. Harley takes the monster home and attempts to give it a makeover. This works out about as well as can be expected. The failed makeover is interrupted by another giant metallic monster that has decided to attack. The story then shifts focus to find out who sent the robot after them. Harley Quinn Is the M VP of the issue. She has great moments with Batman, Joker, and pretty much any other character interaction. I also appreciate the Poison Ivy cameos in this issue. It's pretty clear that Ivy and Harley are in a relationship and it's conveyed matter of factly rather than to push some sort of political message. The characters are presented as real people that genuinely care about each other. The Harley-Ivy scenes are brief but I appreciated them nonetheless. In contrast to the other DC/Looney Tunes crossovers that were released this week the backup feature in this issue actually works great. The story reads like a standard Looney Tunes Gossamer short with Harley acting as a stand-in for Bugs Bunny. The art is beautifully rendered by David Alvarez and Sholly Fisch nails all of the character voices. I'm not sure If I will go back and pick up any Harley Quinn comics in the future but I will be less likely to dismiss her at the outset. This One-Shot proved to me that the character can work on her own and in a lead role. I know that will get a "duh" response from her fanbase but for me that's a huge compliment. more

Well, it's a Harley comic written by Palmiotti and Conner. What else did you expect? It's cheap fan fiction, and contrary to Harl's almost equally terrible regular solo series, this time there's no Frank Cho who could draw a beautiful variant cover, so I can say at least one positive thing about the issue. Remember cute crossovers of DC and Hanna-Barbera? Super Sons and Dynomutt, Aquaman and Jabberjaw? They were great. This one, on the other hand, is an abomination featuring everything wrong with post Dini/Timm Harley I can think of. And yes, that includes the black-red hair as well I loathe as much as New 52's Mr. Freeze retconned origin story and Rose Wilson poking hero own eye out. And guess what - all of them were fortunately fixed, bu t every now and often one of them returns like aggressive tumor. Add your casual unfunny humor and annoying accent gimmick to that, sprinkle some Harley-Ivy against-the-character fan-fic shipping, and also pretty bad art, and what you get is this issue. It's bad. Insultingly bad. It's the New-52 Harley quality (or lack of any), not even kidding. more
