Convergence: Detective Comics #2

At the end of the day, my connection to the dynamic duo of Huntress and Robin is pretty far removed, but it was nice to see one piece of major resolution come out of the story for those fans of the original. It was even nicer to see that that moment wasnt the be-all and end-all for the storys success. That alone puts Convergence: Detective Comics #2 a bit ahead of some other offerings this week. Overall: This book was certainly a surprise. After an otherwise stellarentry into the Convergence catalogue, this issue comespacked with action, emotion, and some of the few moments I will remember from this whole event. In the first issue of this two parter, we saw Len Wein explore issues of stability and responsibility. The power of the Earth 2 before Crisis on Infinite Earths came from a sense of legacy, but also a sense of permanence and stability. This was world where civilization and society were important, where authority was still a thing to respect and not automatically fear, where brave soldiers and intrepid scientists battled against threats to all humanity at the behest of a generally good and honest government. It was the world of 1950s science fiction, and against it Wein set the example of Moscow from the Red Son universe, a place of stability tinged with stagnation. But even here there was nobility, for the Soviet Superman genuinely wanted what was best for his people. Read Full Review

Convergence: Detective Comics #2 is a decent book that offers up a lot of fun, I just wish this little bit was its own event in and of itself as it sets up a nice new book with a new Batman and Huntress. And for someone who loved seeing Dick Grayson wear the cowl, I'd be sure to keep reading the stories that follow. Read Full Review

"Convergence: Detective Comics" #2 isn't quite as exciting as the first issue, but it's still an above average "Convergence" tie-in. If more of them had been this entertaining, it probably would have helped keep reader attention on the event. Hopefully, we won't have to wait so long for another Wein, Cowan, Sienkiewicz and Sotomayor collaboration; these four creators clearly work well together. Read Full Review

The first issue was really interesting, especially from the Red Son Superman perspective as we saw how he struggled to maintain order in his country without his superpowers. None of that is present in the final issue " it's a silly fight, with over-expository language, a hackneyed lesson learned, a predictable ending, and characters who even acknowledge to the reader how out-of-character they're acting. This issue ended the Convergence: Detective Comics story on such a good note, but unfortunately, I can't sit back and ignore the other twenty pages.  This issue was filled with awkward dialogue, odd situations and a bunch of nonsense.  However, I did like the art and it ends with what every fan wanted to see from this story.  I wish I could recommend it, but I just can't. I was disappointed in this closing even after the strong debut of the previous issue. I liked the arc of Huntress with the Russian Batman but there were still too many questions left open in this the conclusion of the Convergence event. How does this affect the Crisis on Infinite Earths if it even happened at all? Read Full Review

With such great love for Earth-Two and Red Son universes I wanted to like Convergence: Detective Comics #2 more than I did. While Earth-Two Dick Grayson story arc provided this series a constant to hang onto it was not enough to get over its shortcoming. Too much time was spent making excuses as to why characters where making choices that did not line up with past portrayals. These out-of-character actions made it hard to recommend this as a series fans should read. Read Full Review

Minimal memorable moments, and limited stakes made for a clunky finish. Red Sun Batman was cool to see again, but lacked grit, while Huntress felt weak and dumb through this final section. Not my cup of tea. A mediocre Convergence tie-in that didn't capitalize on the high potential - just like the majority of the event. Have to hunt hard for the good ones I guess...

The artwork is atrocious and the writing is terrible, how could this be the same writer as the Swamp Thing tie-in? Robin and Huntress the most unheroic motivation, it's comedic more than anything. I cannot fathom why the comic has a two pages of recap, DC has long neglected any sort of recap page in their titles, yet a two issue mini-series has a two page recap? That's just stupid, who in their right mind would only buy the second issue of a two-part series in the first place? Oh, and why do the Russians speak English? You know, aside from a couple Russian words thrown in to make even less sense, rather than assume an alien translation force is at play. The end to the conflict is also extremely lazy given how the whole "Let's fight, no let' s not fight" has already played out. more
