Batman Beyond #42

Batman Beyond #42 is another great issue in a series that manages to recapture the spirit of the original cartoon, while carrying the story forward. Jurgens has managed to create an organic extension of the cartoon's mythos. Reading this book frequently gives me the urge to go back and re-watch the series. Current events have given me a lot of extra free time to do so, so I have placed an order for the Complete Series Blu-Ray, which will hopefully give me my Batman Beyond fix while I wait for the comic to return from hiatus. Batman Beyond #42 was a spectacular conclusion to a new plot arc. I don't know how large the impact will be from this arc, but I'm looking forward to finding out. This has truly been a merger of the old and the new, and that has made it all the more interesting. Read Full Review

I suppose the arc, from Batwoman's secret to now, had one specific purpose. It was here to introduce a new character into the Batman Beyond pantheon. This recent run masterfully achieved that. If the storyline didn't exactly stick the landing, I can still see a string of great stories to come with multiple bats bringing more layers of suspense to proceedings. Read Full Review

Nothing about this issue or even this arc feels like there's anyone who cares about this title because it relied solely on finding out who the mysterious new Batwoman was and because of that, everyone had to act like idiots, while also trying to rely on the hype of bringing Blight back, even though that just kind of happened...... like the new Batwoman.  Nothing really felt like it mattered here and by the end, this entire arc just felt like one big gimmick that never really came together or felt like it made sense.  Thankfully, the art in this issue was great though so at least you have that to look forward to. Batman Beyond #42 is an adequate ending for what should've been a much better issue. Seeing Terry back in the cowl is great, but Jurgens doesn't deliver an interesting enough action sequence for the big return. Last issue seemed to imply a much more targeted and personal showdown between Blight and Bruce, but Jurgens deflects that goldmine of drama for generic comic book action theatrics courtesy of Terry and Elainna's team-up. Luckily, a return to status quo is welcome and Jurgens has all his pieces back in place for the book to return to its strengths. Read Full Review

This was a surprisingly mediocre ending to an arc that I had been really enjoying. The buildup of Batwoman seems to have quickly ebbed out, and the convenient return of Bat McGinnis makes things appear to be going back to the status quo. Read Full Review
