What's to Love: There's a lot of heart in Rebecca Sugar's Steven Universe, and a big part of that comes from the relationship between Steven and his dad, Greg. We've gathered some top indie talent for a collection of Gregcentric shorts that are sure to warm your heart.
What It Is: Steven Universe and the rest of the Crystal Gems are bonafide heroes, saving Beach City day after day. But you know who else is a hero? Greg Universe! Steven's dad might not have Crystal Gem powers, but he's a valuable member of the team, too! This collection of shorts features fatherandson fun, as Greg teaches Steven some valuable life lessons.

Apr 28, 2015While I discussed the stand out stories of the Greg Universe Special above, each story brings something entertaining to the table, culminating in one truly great anthology. BOOM! Studios' Steven Universe ongoing title has time and time again captured the spirit of the show, but this special one-shot has effortlessly captured the show's heart and emotional layers in one easy-to-digest package. Steven Universe: Greg Universe Special #1 is filled with laughs, fantastic art, and multiple moments that might make readers misty-eyed as they read. Greg Universe might not be the star of show, but Steven Universe: Greg Universe Special #1 makes a pretty compelling case for how he could be. Read Full Review

May 13, 2015Lastly, the dialogue in Steven Universe was reminiscent of the show. The letters were of varying fonts, colors, and shapes. They captured the reader's attention and were placed in ways that reflected the story and complimented the art styles. The only reason I have given it an eight is because in some stories, the dialogue was either distracting or difficult to follow. Overall, however, the plots, art, and dialogue flowed together into one Steven Universe masterpiece. Read Full Review

Apr 27, 2015I found all of the stories added depth to the character of Greg Universe and his relationship with Steven. However, as it is based on a TV show I assume there must have been storyline restrictions. I'd love to see another one of these specials come out after we learn more about Greg on the show. Apr 29, 2015There are adults who haven’t grasped the message of this story, but writer Grace Kraft and illustrator Kelly Turnbull get out a moral lesson in just a few pages. Besides the nostalgia, this story is spreading positivity, to get up when you’re knocked down. This is the story that emphasizes the father-son relationship more than any others, even the parent-child relationship. It’s something we all love and yearn for, but often times don’t get. Not to mention, it’s pretty cool that Greg Universe got his own series special. I’m going to recommend this for people of all ages, and tell you right now that it’s one of the cutest books you will read. Read Full Review

Apr 30, 2015Greg is the fantasy character who we ultimately see all the other characters through: he's so much like us, and his ambitions are so much more akin to ours, that his reactions and actions in these bananas situations help give give a feeling of the tension and turmoil. He's also the part that helps us come down and reminds us that there are people out there to care. He's the backbone, the constant support, the non-understanding and lovable figure who tries to do what's best, and this collection does a nice job at exploring that. Read Full Review
