This is a nicely nicely documentary from a Daughter to her Dad, a vanity project to pay homage to a man who did lead a full life. I don't know if it's going to be as hard hitting a documentary as it could have been if someone who could step back from the subject matter.

For Horse Racing fans this is a must see, I doubt if any fan of the sport will fail to be interested in the story behind the amazing record that the man has. For people like me who wouldn't care if the sport stopped tomorrow it's an invaluable insight into the world of one man's career that spanned 20 years and brought so many wins that no one in his lifetime will probably come close to. A great must watch documentary.

Closed Curtain #1 |
Sep 03, 2015
show
|
|
Closed Curtain is more an attempt, it seems to me, for this massively creative man to come to terms with his home country trying to destroy his creative rights. The sad thing is that the film isn't as entertaining as you'd hope and the choice to make pointless scenes longer than they should rather than stretching out the scenes that really could have been longer hurts the effect on the viewer. You understand fully what he is trying to say and wonder if his experiences have hurt him too much for his talent to break fully free. I will give credit for the symbolism that he manages to show us and his own appearance in the film is tender and sweet, with a clear message coming right at the end that the man has decided what needs to be done next, and we hope with all the hope that we have in our cinema bones that his next film will give us more. For no reason other than to give him support and maybe you'll find more in this film than I did, get out and see this, and check out the history of J

Clouds Of Sils Maria #1 |
May 11, 2015
show
|
|
Clouds of Sils Marie is the type of film that explores the depths of human frailty, with Binoche coming to terms with the new cinema layout where Superhero movies make overnight stars of everyone involved. The main story is the relationship between Binoche and Stewart, and these play well against one another. With Stewart almost stepping over the line of her normal job as P.A. Being the Daughter that Binoche never had, pushing the ageing actress to do more with her talent, she finds herself not understanding the process as well as she thought. The beautiful and inspiring Alps provide us with some majestic background to the drama. It's not going to be every-ones cup of tea, but there is enough acting talent on display that it will sate your hunger, coming in to the over the top summer movie season. This is more an acting masterclass presented by Binoche and Stewart than anything else.

Deadfall Adventures #1 |
Dec 19, 2013
show

After a few years of playing Halo and COD games this came as a nice little change of pace, there are better shooters out there, but Deadfall Adventures gives you a sweet look back to the adventures of the 40′s and with the online play out there, this could be a whole lot of fun for a fan of first person shooters. While adding nothing new and taking a lot from other games it's nothing amazing, but just entertaining enough to be worth your time.

Don't whine about the subtitles or the fact that there is no flame throwing guitar, The Dead Lands is the film that you want to see if you like pure action movies. I'm pretty sure that the final scene robbed the music direct from the end of Death Wish 2, because since hearing it replayed in my head over and over again since leaving the IFI Dublin.

There is a little romantic under story going on with Malcolm and a girl from the area, but it is so quickly shot through, you feel that it's just a throw away story device. Small points that let the film down shouldn't take away from the overall joy of watching this future classic. It's a story about fitting in, about finding those friends who like what you like and who will have your back, and it's about the choices that you make. The mistakes that Malcolm makes could effect his life and ruin his future but he's smart enough to not allow that to happen. The film has a great soundtrack and is shot in a way that reminds me of Two Days in the Valley. You can't get a grasp on what is going to happen next, and that is a good thing, it's always a good thing to keep you guessing. It's also a fun movie that leaves you wanting more from some of the supporting players. I'll happily go back and watch this film again and again. Well worth your cinema money!

In the end my opinion of this film came from the children that watched the film in screen 2, they didn't laugh, they didn't cheer, and about twenty of them had a great fun game of chasing around the auditorium during the film. I couldn't even be bothered to get annoyed at them for doing that, which if I paid in to the film I would have, instead I just decided to enjoy the fun that they were having outside the realms of the film. If they were not interested why should I be?

This is a story that while it doesn't have much of an emotional presence but is strangely fascinating at the same time. The artists learn this by seeing and hearing the words of veterans of the foundry, there are no books and no YouTube videos. You'll sit there and watch this, maybe not in the cinema but at home, and be taken in by the work and dedication of the people behind the statues. There is nothing terrible about this documentary but then again there is nothing here that calls for you to leave your home and visit the cinema. Interesting stuff but a little narration, a little of the characters from the foundry, and this would have been a different kettle of fish altogether.

Insidious: Chapter 3 #1 |
Jun 04, 2015
show
|
|
This is basic horror writing and film making 101, the reason behind the 8 out 10 score is that basic does not mean that it's still not entertaining, we must recognise the difference. Basic done badly is bad, basic done well is damn well entertaining let me tell you that, and here it is basic done really well. Little has changed in the prequel story type to the first films, but the actors are on top of their game and the demon and ghost designs are their usual high grade goodness. There are one or two shock moments that caught me off guard and it was nice to have that shower of popcorn. Just so you know I managed to eat only those pieces that landed on me. Insidious: Chapter 3 managed to be entertaining, funny, and have enough shocks to keep horror fans, and those horror fans like me, who don't mind silly B-Movie style horror movies.

For me its just a nice change from the norm and will be added to my Christmas rotation of movies. Worth checking out on the big screen this film isnt perfect but it sure is entertaining.

I know a lot of people that will roll their eyes at this, but for the sake of entertainment I hope that Laser Unicorn and all involved get a bigger budget, whatever they do in the future is sure to be bigger, better, and more insane. If there is a chance at Kung Fury 2 then I'd be happy to break my rule of not supporting crowdfunding campaigns. The world needs more insane entertainment like Kung Fury that knows what it is and respects the source that inspired it. Get over to YouTube and watch this, it's the best 30 minutes that you'll have today.

Lambert And Stamp #1 |
May 14, 2015
show
|
|
A Rock documentary like this should be full of insider knowledge, dirty secrets, and back biting interviews. What Lambert and Stamp does is basically read through the Rock and Roll History book that everyone has read and show interviews with old musicians that are trying to make peace with their past. If you don't know the story then this will open your eyes to the scene and times and give you some insight. If you do know the story then you'll find little to nothing here that is more than old rope. For me I know a few fans of The Who and that era of music that will be getting a copy of this film on DVD for birthdays and Christmas over the next few years, as I'm all out of ideas for them.

Man Up #1 |

While this won't be everyone's cup of tea it reminds me of one of the stories from Love Actually, which is my shameful secret love, don't look at me like that. This is a date night movie that is perfect for the first time out or the lost count date night. Pegg and Bell are the selling points for this film, they bounce off each other as though they have been doing this acting lark together for years. The writing is crisp and sharp, and while it's an old hate type of thing, yes we've seen it all before, there is just something extra that made me smile during watching the film. They could have easily found something other than Coldplay to play during the sad parts of the movie, it seems like an easy choice, don't get me wrong it works. This is romantic comedy that is easy going, light viewing, and enjoyable enough for a change of pace from the summer blockbusters.

Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict #1 |
Dec 08, 2015

The story is tragic and beautiful, strange and sentimental, the list of lovers that she bedded is a who's who of the great artists and writers of the 20th Century. One of my favourites is when she describes how she bedded Samuel Beckett for four straight days. For art lovers, art historians, and people curious about this major figure in the Guggenheim family, Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict is a sentimental, often interesting, sometimes frustrating, but always watchable documentary that you should take a chance on. Check it out in the IFI Dublin.

In the past I have stated that Rebel Wilson is someone that I'm not a fan of. Here in Pitch Perfect 2 as Amy she is entertaining enough that she doesn't annoy me as she usually does. The music is infectious and Banks should be applauded for a great job behind the camera. As sequels go Pitch Perfect 2 is one of the best out there. I don't know if I could watch a third movie in the series, but I will finally cave to the teens and watch part one.

Spooks: The Greater Good #1 |
May 07, 2015
show
|
|
The story is compelling enough in the current mood of the World. Kit Harington, he of Game of Thrones, plays the young agent who was kicked out of the Service because it seems he has morals, who is dragged back in when the Chief goes off the reservation. There is a mole hunt and a countdown to find the terrorist who has unfinished business with the Service. The film goes from England to Germany and back again. This probably works best if you have seen some of the TV show that it is based on, but for me, being new to the party, it was entertaining and exciting enough that I would pay my own cash to see the film. Also The Greater Good made me feel that I wanted to find the box set of the TV show and binge on that for a while. If you want a good spy versus terrorist flick then this will be for you.

There are some violent parts to this film, but they are masked in comedy, and not that often. It's not violence for violence sake, it's the violence that they need to keep everything balanced. I've docked a point for the running time. There was a few moments that could have cut down the 2 hour running time. It's about as perfect a comedy you're going to get and it the funniest film I've seen so far this year. If you are not laughing then chances are you're just cheering on Cooper as she reaches for her goals. But you will be laughing a lot, as least if you have a soul, and you do have a soul. Funny, intelligent, empowering, and well polished this is the comedy of the year for me so far. Get out to the cinema, as I'll be going back time and time again on release.

This is one that I'd gladly watch again, and will buy the DVD on release, if someone gave me a copy of the film I'd be even happier. I know it's not going to be for everyone but horror fans will love the tributes that are paid to the horror classics which obviously inspired this. One thing that I really loved was the Police Detective that had acid reflux, it was just a genius comedic moment admit the horror. Strong performances from the main cast as well as supporting actors give the film that edge of 'is it' supernatural or 'is it' a psychological breakdown. This all adds to a really thoughtful and shock ending. You'll kick yourself for missing this one horror fans. Get out there and watch on release.

Top Five #1 |
May 05, 2015
show
|
|
Top Five is that film that Rock will be remembered for more than any other film he has done so far. He's managed to step away from his cock sure character that he's played way too many times and given us a film that is adult, dramatic, funny, and sad. There are higher paid Writers and Directors out there that can't do that. Feeling semi Autobiographical with that insider knowledge into the life of a celebrity you'd be forgiven for mistaking this as a typical Chris Rock movie, what you won't be forgiven for is missing it. I just won't talk to you and will not send you a card on your birthday. Enough laughs to keep you for the comedy, and paying the audience some respect back with the ending. Mr. Chris Rock has done himself proud.
