An all-new interpretation of Tatsuo Yoshida’s classic manga/anime, MachGoGoGo, known to Western audiences as Speed Racer! Speed Racer lives for the thrill of the race, but on the underground circuit, the rules are anything goes. Dodging bullets, explosions, and dirty tricks, he’s got one goal: to prove he’s the best. But when a dangerous syndicate targets his family, Speed’s greatest challenge won’t be on the track…it’ll be on the streets. With the police closing in and a masked racer lurking in the shadows, Speed is about to learn that some races can’t be won with horsepower alone. Award-winning writer DAVID PEPOSE (Space Gho more

    Capes & Tights - Justin Soderberg Jul 16, 2025

While I still will gravitate towards the darker and more gritty comics, Speed Racer hit the nostalgic sweet spot for me. David Pepose updates a classic character and world for the current day with such ease, while the art from Davide Tinto and Rex Lokus complement the story to give a truly immersive and wonderfully nostalgic experience. Speed Racer #1 is a treat for longtime fans while also welcoming newer audiences into the fold. Read Full Review

KPB Comics - Chris Hernandez Jul 30, 2025

Speed Racer #1 delivers on the high-octane thrills while also exploring Speed's struggle to prove himself in his brother's shadow. It's a nuanced look at the emotional side of racing. Last but not least, the unique element that every driver brings to the race continues to be a highlight, raising the stakes even higher when rivet guns, bottle-rocket launchers, and “skull-n-bones mace” get involved. But ultimately, as the comic reminds us, it's about the driver, not just the car. Read Full Review

Comic Watch - Theron Couch Jul 28, 2025

Speed Racer (MachGoGoGo) has a long history, not least because it was accessible in the United States when manga and anime were not yet widely so. If Speed Racer #1 is any indication, the creative team plans to deliver a fresh and modern American comic book take on past characters and concepts. The result is that this Speed Racer is an exciting comic that everyone can enjoy. Read Full Review

The story, which was first introduced in the Speed Racer #0 Free Comic Book Day special issue, introduces a new take on the classic manga and anime series Mach GoGoGo. I wasn't familiar with the franchise until the 2008 Speed Racer movie came out, but it never really grabbed my attention so I never saw it. The FBCD special was my first actual exposure to the IP. With that perspective in mind, Speed Racer #1 did everything a debut issue relaunching a popular franchise needs to do: grab your attention with an exciting story that makes you want to read the next issue, introduce a cast of characters with enough background to get you rooting for (or against) them going forward, and hold newbies hands just enough to not make them feel completely more

Speed Racer issue one was a pleasant surprise - the Free Comic Book Day preview wasn’t my cup of tea … I’m not saying that this comic is totally in my wheelhouse - but I was impressed. The character’s weren’t too deep but in a comic like this it’s not necessary. What I liked was the pace of the book … there was a sense of speed in the art and storytelling that I really enjoyed. The sequence racing to the hospital really sucked me into the pages and I felt a sense of motion between the panels. When the book ended I was surprised it was only 26 pages … David Pepose really packed a lot of story into this book! I think I’ll be adding Speed Racer to my pull list.
