It starts with birds materializing. It'll end with the death of the heavens. Cosmic horror you can dance to in a one-off apocalypse romance from KIERON GILLEN (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, THE POWER FANTASY), STEVE LIEBER (THE FIX, Jimmy Olsen) and TAMRA BONVILLAIN (Once & Future).
It's not very often that single idea is given this kind of space on the page. There had been a point at some stage in the past where whole series would be based on one shot stories. I used to call them anthologies. It used to be the fundamental format of the comic book in an earlier era. It's so nice to see the full realization of a flash fiction piece rendered in comic book format. It may not be the type of thing that is all that marketable in the current era of comic books. Don't go intoCloser expecting hard sci-fi cosmic horror... You will be disappointed. Gillen himself refers to the story as "soft-edge fantasy." In an "Apocalyptic Romance" like Closer, your protagonist isn't going to get all the answers, and neither are you. This quick, enjoyable read is a reflection on a single moment, expanded beyond the cosmos into a world-ending threat. If you enjoy Gillen's writing, Lieber's art, or great music, I highly recommend reading Closer. And don't forget to add "(They Long To Be) Close To You" to your Spotify playlist, I promise it will be stuck in your head by the time you finish reading. Read Full Review
