The new Secret Six is a perfect successor to DC Comics' long tradition of covert heroes. If this first issue has a flaw, it is something of a slow start. The story focuses on half the team and we only see Deadshot and Catman on the final page. If you like heroes on the anti- and/or queer side, then the new Secret Six series by Nicole Maines and Stephen Segovia is worth picking up. I didn't follow the Absolute Power event so I was lost at some parts, but enjoyed the scenes where Jon Kent and Gossamer were having boyfriend spats. Read Full Review

Certainly thats the basic concept at work here. Secret Six #1has the making of a cool idea about a team coming together to hunt down an escaped supervillain. Nicole Maines's script has most of the right parts to tell a gripping story, and Stephen Segovia's work is awesome (naturally), but the script suffers from poor choices by the characters, lots of annoying bickering, and forced coincidences. The strongest part of this issue is Jon’s concern for Jay. Like Jay or not, like Jay and Jon as a couple or not, the concern Jon feels for Jay is something that is relatable to everyone. Despite having no affection for Absolute Power or Amanda Waller as a major villain, the mystery is of her escape is pretty strong. There are aspects of this issue that feel very niche and that will play differently to different people, but in and of itself it’s not a bad thing. One of the things that does stand out is that Nia, Jay and Black Alice (and the barely seen Catman and Deadshot) all seem to be played with a sense of the anti-hero…or “broken” hero (yes, some of them are 100% anti-heroes/ villains). Jon’s place with them is fairly awkward. He demonstrates his concern for Jay and his trust in Nia, but the whole positioning of the group (except Jon?) just feels weird.

I was a big fan of the Secret Six, but for me, this will be the first and last issue. Extremely mediocre, with uninteresting characters and a team that, unlike the original Secret Six, doesn’t feel like it works. At some point, they need to stop giving comics to mediocre writers who wouldn’t be able to sell a thousand copies even if their life depended on it.
