America is a melting pot for the supernatural. Ghosts and gods, angels and demons, horror stories and tall-tales, they’ve traveled from across the globe to collide in the rural Heartland… and cowboy arcanist Avery Belle has spent a very long lifetime amongst them. Horror noir meets Elmore Leonard in the mystic Mid-West.

Nerd Initiative - Mickey Smith Jul 23, 2025

TexArcanum is the perfect blend of action, horror, and history. I've tried to avoid comparisons as much as I could, but this really is the perfect start of a story for fans of Supernatural, Constantine, and everything in between. I love westerns and horror, so when those things come together I'm totally in. This is a great story by Christopher Monfette full of rich history, monsters, and mystical evil. The artwork is phenomenal and enhances the story. Read Full Review

Texarcanum #1mixes horror elements and Southern noir for a unique premise, which results in a unique read. If you're a fan of shows likeSupernatural or Buffy the Vampire Slayer,it's definitely worth checking out. Ditto if you're into supernatural/horror comics like HellboyorSomething is Killing the Children. It's a story that reminds you that there's things that go bump in the night...but people like Avery Belle are out there, and they're willing to bump back. Read Full Review

Major Spoilers - Jonathan Cadotte Jul 25, 2025

Texarcanum #1 is an exciting and fun supernatural romp through American mythology. It is brutal and violent, with plenty of charm on top. The dialog can be a bit clumsy and awkward though, keeping this from being as engaging as it could've been. Read Full Review

I love the combination of western and horror but TexArcanum is a mixed bag. Christopher Monfette delivers an intriguing story and some truly great writing, but Miguel Martos' art falls short in conveying what the author undoubtedly had in mind. While his style has a certain indie charm, it leaves a lot to be desired. Figures and faces are often wonky and the storytelling is unclear at times. All in all, it looks amateurish, which is why I would probably have rated TexArcanum higher if it were a semi-professional book, not a Dark Horse publication. I'm sure both the writer and artist gave it their best, but the result is just not on a professional level.
