  This is a standalone prequel book. If you are worrying about whether you will be able to get into it don't. Dive right in, and adopt the immersive technique. By the end of this issue, you'll be primed for the main run on this series. If you have read it then it will give you amazingly detailed background on the character, where she has come from and what motivates her. If only all books could be like this. Amazing.   Secret Weapons #0 is one of the more impressive origin stories in the Valiant Universe so far. This is not someone who woke up one day and could fly or lift a car. She talks to birds, but that doesn't stop her from springing into action. Nikki's was everything you could want in a character who isn't given anything or thrust into situations of convenience. If I wanted a hero to look up to, it would be one who faces real obstacles and knows what it means to endure. Read Full Review

  'Secret Weapons' #0 may not include much action but this character study reveals a lot about Nikki and the Valiant universe. It's a good primer for new readers and a bonus for 'Secret Weapons' fans. Heisserer as the screenwriter of the film Arrival has shown that fantasy science fiction and superhero stories can be thoughtful and engaging without cheap thrills or over-the-top set pieces.   There's a lack of action that might discourage some readers " not everyone loves a detailed character study " but the premise is still exciting and the hyper-focus on Nikki makes for a surprisingly relatable psiot. I would have loved to have seen more conversations between Ms. Finch and the birds (because who hasn't wished they could talk to animals), but this is a backstory, and an altogether well-executed one at that.
