Aug 18, 2010Simon Gane's artwork is more spare than what readers may remember from Velvet Underground, particularly because of the simpler blue-and-black color palette. The art was occasionally too simple for the story - I would have expected a post-storm Katrina to show more damage and debris, for instance. Still, the art is clear and good at conveying emotion. A recurring problem I noticed is that the storytelling tends to stumble during transition sequences, as if some vital panels wound up on the cutting room floor. I don't know whether writer or artist is to blame for that, but it is a bit perplexing. I was looking forward to Dark Rain for quite a while, and I was disappointed to find I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. Potential readers should consider checking out A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge for the current definitive Hurricane Katrina-related comic. Read Full Review
