Every issue of Savage Sword so far has been a treat for fans of Conan and the wider world of Robert E Howard's storytelling. This issue features a long Conan tale followed by short stories about two of REH's lesser-known creations - Spear & Fang and Sailor Steve Costigan. The Spear & Fang yarn is a caveman bloodbath marking 100 years since the publication of REH's first published story. Sailor Steve Costigan sets off on a rip-roaring romp on shore leave in Singapore, illustrated by Rob De La Torre's wild inky brushwork. Doug Braithwaite's rough, vigorous drawing of the main feature is similarly well-suited to this kind of pulpish adventure. His style is perfect for Conan - detailed, but loose and alive. A world away from the simple, clean, cartoony style that's so prevalent in comics - and everywhere - these days. The stories are all well-written by Jim Zub, but great art has always been the mainstay of Savage Sword and the tradition shows no sign of waning. All these tales are tied in to the Scourge of the Serpent event, but if you're not into crossovers, don't let that stop you, because this issue works well on its own. more
