May 05, 2021It's taken five volumes, but Chise is finally starting to grow a spine in this magical world of hers. She's been a floundering, weak heroine in need of saving, but in this volume, she takes charge and decides to make this potion for Joel, despite the dangers. Yes, she drains herself and needs saving in the end, and Elias does save her again, but this time, she knew what she was getting herself into. She's starting to become more comfortable with her magical abilities. Yamazaki continues to remind us that Chise is a ticking time-bomb, however. Every time Chise gets to use her magic, she ends up hurting herself, or potentially taking years off her life. This back and forth - wanting Chise to do magic, but not wanting her to die - is a triumph of this series' narrative. Read Full Review
