Young Avengers #9

Now that it's been thrown out into the open, Gillen doesn't let Loki escape from his past any more than he lets readers forget about it. Additionally, he's placed the young Hawkeye in a precarious position with her own approaching adulthood, a thread that will hopefully unravel to give the archer more screentime after several issues of being in the backseat. But wherever Gillen takes the Young Avengers, one hopes the journey includes someone who can talk sense into Noh-Varr regarding his truly questionable choice in facial hair. Read Full Review

Is it any surprise that this series still hasn't missed a beat? If it is, it's probably time to adjust your thinking, but Gillen, McKelvie, and everyone else involved in this series are on fire. The care that goes into the story and artwork, and even the recap and title pages, is so evident that I can't believe more people aren't reading this series. Overall, the issue was a lot of fun and successfully planted the seeds of what is to come. By breaking up the team a bit and leading them in a new direction, I have genuine curiosity about what will happen next. Young Avengers is my favorite Marvel title being published right now, and it's reaffirmed every month by stellar material such as this. A solid 8.5 out of 10. Now give me the next issue. Young Avengers remain interesting for those fascinated by this ragtag group of heroes. The creators work very well together and should give readers some extended interest in this series. For some reason this series does not get enough love in comparison to some of the other Marvel Now titles, presumably it is only because of the crowded comic book market and not the extreme quality of this title. Good enough finish to this storyline though I felt it could have been better. It was rushed and I just didn't feel that same fun vibe that the book originally gave me at the start. Of course the story would eventually get serious, but at the cost of the entertainment value I felt that it was a bit harmful to the overall tone. Hopefully what comes next will take us back to what we liked most about Young Avengers, though there's a split chance for that given the surprise appearance at the end of the story. Read Full Review

Still, that's the sort of thing that'll read better in the trade, and even if the villain is weird there's no shortage of tumult in the lives of the team. Basically, this book left us with a lot of questions. Moving forward, there are some big changes coming for the Young Avengers and I'm enjoying following along every step of the way. For an arc that demanded our heroes to travel universes, encounter dimensional phenomena and ancient goddesses, and ask some hard questions about themselves, we get some very low-key results out of it, though plenty of food for later thought. Read Full Review

As a whole this issue was a fairly solid read, but it was hindered by the fact that not much happened until the ending scenes. As the final issue of the arc, nothing was really resolved, and knowing the same plot devices will continue on into the next storyline is a bit of a bummer.
