Winter Guard #3

Winter Guard #3 is another awesome part of the underrated miniseries. The adventures of one of the most compelling groups in the Marvel Universe are fantastically written. It is a lively team with incredible characters and an intriguing plotline. There is utter madness in each issue as the combat is filled with giant bears or vampires or shadow gods, but also contains real depth to the dialogue and commentary on Russia. I guess the revelation came up including how Yelena found herself in a heated situation. Plus there's what I always felt about Alexei and Yelena's dynamic. Alexei believes in the dreams of Stalin so much he's ready to let the public burn it all to the ground. Which is why I like Yelena as a character; while she expressed similar feelings when it comes to billionaires and world leaders, she refuses to bend a knee to anyone willing to hurt people. But then there's why this issue slowed down a bit in my opinion, like most exposition this didn't feel as all encompassing just a way for background stakes to raise. I'm mostly just waiting for what the bigger revelations are and if they're worth a payoff.

I liked the bits with Red Guardian, I could feel the parallels with Captain America but Drakula's whole reasoning made absolutely no sense and a lot of the dialogue was just there for the sake of it.

It's the big reveal issue, so I'm okay with it being slow and talky. There are a lot of words, but they're pretty good words. And the visuals are pretty good, too. The revelation was hugely disappointing, at least to me. Plus, I lost track of the motivations behind character decisions, particularly when Yelena and Alexei turn on each other at the end. And this big pile of words is surprisingly delicate; I scrutinized this issue looking for answers and it just got less satisfying the closer I looked. To expand on my disappointment: Alexei's plan is, essentially, releasing the Panama Papers. Look what a revolutionary effect that's had in our world.
