Heroes Direct - Adam Fitch
Dec 28, 2016This series, so far, has taken the first Ultimates story and improved upon it tenfold in terms of scale and delight. This is reflected in the script and the artwork. The visual side of the comic is beautiful and elegant at times, and the colours couldn't look any more realistic. The things we see are surreal, but the colours ground them to a certain extent. It will be a ways to go to reach that point, but all the things set up through this issue? Yeah, that says enough about what we've been missing caring too much about Earth's problems. It lacks the humor and kinetic pacing of the previous issue, but the final outcome is interesting and promises continued intrigue in the near future. The art supporting the story, while well-intentioned, still makes this book feel less grandiose than it should. Despite the Ultimates' mantra, it's not always the huge problems that pose the biggest threats — sometimes it's the simpler, more fundamental ones. Read Full Review

Ewing has an amazing knowledge of deep-cut Marvel continuity and he's not afraid to use it. And he's not only acknowledging recent stories by other writers here (something that certain big event writers can't be bothered doing), but he's building on them to tell his own. I can't wait to see where this is going.

I'm enjoying this series so far. Al Ewing does deep cosmic in a way others can't, breaking out the heavy hitters (Living Tribunal, Eternity, etc.) Travel Foreman also does a great job with the art here. This is a fun, epic book.
