Comics Bulletin - Shawn Hill
Aug 09, 2010This issue features none of the bloody conflicts or supernatural attacks that others have shown, yet a sense of growing anxiety builds inexorably even in the fragile stronghold of the Free Zone. All of the drama plays out in interesting conversations and well-chosen narration that shows rather than telling. Even when King exposits, he has characters do it with such personality that he gets away with it. This fable hinges on small human foibles and petty resentments, and Aguirre-Sacasa and Perkins (of course abetted at every turn by the priceless Laura Martin, who moves us from dawn through the day to a night of fearful shadows through color alone) make sure every one of them has real resonance.
