Loud and intense, Spurrier, Quinn, and Silva deliver a terrifying fantasy tale that still contains lovely moments of hope. It successfully combines two groups of characters that are not guaranteed to mesh together, yet that abrasive factor actually helps. The cover looks good but it also overemphasizes the X-Men's involvement in this issue a bit too much. 1.5/2 The art looks great with the magical elements really standing out. 2/2 The dialogue with Dane and Jacks is done really well. 2/2 The story is good with some interesting moments and an absolutely shocking twist. 2/2 The characters are absolutely great in this comic, as I said before Dane and Jacks' father-daughter/mentor-student relationship works really well. 2/2

Spurrier's Black Knight continues to be a delight, and I'm relieved to see Faiza back; when she wasn't mentioned in the mini I was afraid they were dropping a great character down the memory hole

This is big dense story that was exciting had a ton of heart and showed the characters adjusting and working together as a team by the end. I love a story with a lot of meat on the bones and this is certainly that.

An event one-shot can be used to further an author's unrelated narrative agenda. This can be done well and done poorly. Mr. Spurrier does it very well here, helped along by some great art that manages to be both cartoony and creepy. I love how thoroughly the problem du jour and its solution are tied to the author's evolving Black Knight world-building. The X-Men and the Death of Dr. Strange do capable service in setting up the problem, and Faiza locks in as an appropriate short-term ally with tons of long-term potential. It's not flawless, though. The recap on the current "dual Black Knight" situation is absolutely necessary, but it could have been made a lot smoother. And I don't like how long it takes for Jacks's character develo more

I think Spurrier cut off a little more than he could chew with this one. It's not bad, but this feels like a couple issues worth of story crammed into one slightly longer issue. It is basically a continuation of that solid Black Knight miniseries he did a while ago. On that front it works. Jacks and Dane really do work well together here. Jacks, the bull-headed action hero, and Dane, the often-neglected hero who knows what he's doing and saves the day in the end. I like that mentor dichotomy. There's just too much feeding into this issue to really keep the pacing nice. I would rate it higher, if only.

Black Knight is not a disaster, but this book definitely is, as was Spurrier's Black Knight mini-series, total disrespect for the main hero, he's a side character in his own franchise.
