Star Wars #50 is a great turning point for the series as we get further away from A New Hope and edge closer toThe Empire Strikes Back. 'Hope Dies' looks to be like a fairly intense arc that will put our heroes to the test, but also make Vader fans very happy. Gillen nails the characters and does well building the tension within the story while Larroca illustrates some good, if sometimes flawed, artwork. This is as good a time as any to be reminded of the Empire's threat and power. Read Full Review

The main book is fun and I'm hopeful that Han will have a good run in this arc to help out and that we get some neat twists and turns as more of the recent past is brought into it. Much of the Star Wars comic series has seen the Rebels going on covert missions, with this arc teasing that the Galactic Empire has a few tricks up their own sleeves. Additionally, the Rebels are often depicted as a ragtag group of survivors, with this issue depicting what the full force of the Rebellion looks like, made all the more impressive by Salvador Larocca's art. Star Wars #50 is a dramatic and impactful milestone issue for the Marvel rendition of the title. It feels momentous, and it can sell the reader on the drama of the events transpiring within. Add to it the excellent artwork of Larroca and Guru-eFX as well as Camuncoli, Smith, and Tartaglia, and you have a book well worth recommending despite an admittedly hefty asking price. Check it out. Issue 50 of Star Wars delivers some impressive big ship battles and its always great to see the Empire at full force, especially Darth Vader. The artwork is also very good and while the pacing is a little slow, I still really enjoyed reading it and love taking a monthly visit to the original Star Wars characters, but its hard to be too excited since there is never any threat to the main cast. Betrayed, outgunned, and with their backs against the wall, it will be interesting to see how the core characters make it out of Vader's trap as we're likely to see lots of action in the issues to come (if the Rebellion can figure out how to launch its fighters before the Star Destroyers pick them off one-by-one). I tend to love big issues just because of the extra content. I'm glad they stuck the background story at the end just to make everything clear. The issue is stuffed with classic characters. More Star Wars fun.

Best issue out of the core series in a long time and easily the best of Kieron's run so far.

A pretty good story, but it felt like the main plot didn't advance that much from the end of the last issue. I am excited to see how the story continues in the next one. The backup story was amazing, making great use of one of Leia's best moments in A New Hope and tying together all of Gillen's issues so far. Larroca's art in the main story was a little distracting as usual, but Camuncoli's art in the backup was great. I'm glad Hera had a line in this issue, she is such a great character I like seeing her as a prominent member of the rebellion.
