Star-Lord Annual #1

That is this comic. A creative, colorful, gritty, mysterious comic book. It's great for an annual, answers some questions and is a nice treat from Marvel. It will be great for newer fans who perhaps have just seen the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie and will want to dive into the comic world. If you're a long time reader you won't want to miss this one either. It's quite an interesting tale. You'll start out with questions and end up building a time machine to the next comic release. Chip Zdarsky ends his run on Star-Lord with a western that is a lot more than it seems.  It's a strange and smartly written way to end a series and I recommend to everyone, even those who haven't read any of the previous issues.  Djibril Morissette's art fits the subject matter well, but it's all about the story, the characters and the crazy twist(s) at the end. Peter Quill gets stranded on a Wild West planet. Just when the premise gets a little too corny, a monster twist reframes everything and delivers a thought-provoking finale. Chip Zdarsky's farewell is impressively scripted and definitely above average. The twist pulls me toward rating this issue even higher; that suggestion is counterbalanced by the relentless averageness of Djibril Morissette's art. You could also make the usual complaint about this being MCU Star-Lord instead of Abnett & Lanning Star-Lord, but you know what? It's time to let that one go. MCU Star-Lord is plenty interesting in his own right, particularly when he's written this well.
