Nerd Initiative - OffthecuffTom
Jan 10, 2024Melissa Flores has kept the tempo up in this second issue. Right now, it's a fairly straightforward story. But hopefully, I can see a bit of a coming-of-age story developing around the edges. Not much stands out in this book, good or negative. The main pro is that it's an easy, inoffensive read. The downside is squandering good characters. Finding a balance between fluffy content and cape shenanigans is objectively difficult; even Rainbow Rowell hasn't completely nailed it. I think it would honestly be better to choose a lane, and in this case, given who is most likely to want to buy a Spider-Gwen book, just lean into the slice of life and not shoehorn in some obligatory punching. A book just about the band doing band things would probably be more cohesive and work better.

Woof. The creators sure aren't living up to the faith I put in them after the first issue. The content--the basic premise, the plot and characters, their development--that's all fine. Not great, but passable. The material cries out for deft storytelling work to bring it to life and make it engaging. And that, it simply does not get. The writing isn't flawed, but neither is it interesting. And the art…Did I say I had a taste for Enid Balám's work? This issue and its nightmarish proportions (those necks!) certainly seem designed to make me regret that statement.

Well, in ComicBook.com's review 'It's an improvement for sure but one that seems like it's for die hard fans only' I go one step further, because even die hard fans, I heavily assume, will have issues with this second round, at least I have issues: Story is boring, fights are uninspired and not well placed. And the only aspect of reality is completely nonsense, as far as one can seriously can talk about reality of a super-hero comic: How the heck can a band like the Mary Janes become a support act for a huge act playing at Wrigley Field, with a drummer that not even knows the setlist or joins the soundcheck? Please Gwen, go back multiverse hopping, a longer stay on Earth-65 is doing no good to you.
