Steve Orlando continues the consistent excellence with Scarlet Witch #7. The return of Magneto's clone is given the weight it needed. The Wizard of Oz adventure in the middle also further showcased the versatility in storytelling with Wanda Maximoff as the series lead. Steve Orlando keeps churning out this sleeper hit, and every issue gets a little bit better than the last. While Darcys continued presence is beginning to grate, seeing the Scarlet Witch square up against the Wicked Witch of Oz was well worth it. BUT BRING BACK PIETRO AND LORNA! It also doesn't help that the last few pages are given over to the upcoming GODS storyline and that has Jonathan Hickman writing it. It was a jarring disconnect from the rest of the book and with me having zero interest in this event or storyline, it's just a lot of junk that wasn't interesting in the slightest or seemingly connected to anything from within this book, at least on first read. It didn't make me want to read further either. Overall, it's a middling at best installment that offers up some interesting places for it to go with Wanda and the clone of her father – and how others will take to his being there. The book looks great when it deals with Oz and all of its designs and Wanda is her usual self so there's plenty to like there, but this is a largely forgettable issue when it comes to the story itself. This issue spins gold out of straw. The Oz idea is cute but thin, and the explanation for the appearance of "Magneto" is inherently frustrating. The creators gloss over these weaknesses with fast, smart, charming storytelling. The dialogue is distinctive and appealing, and the subject matter aligns perfectly with Lorenzo Tammetta's art style. The introduction of an "Ideaverse" is one of those things I'd normally rake Steve Orlando over the coals for. It's a giant concept that's foreign to the Marvel Universe, but not original or compelling enough to hook my attention. ("Not original" in this case meaning it's been done A LOT. It was a particular favorite of Warren Ellis, if I remember right.) But Scarlet Witch is the one title wher e Mr. Orlando keeps a tight rein on these left-field ideas, and I still love the results. Digression about Jonathan Hickman's stupid GODS teasers: I read my comics through Marvel Unlimited, and I tend to work through a given week in alphabetical order. It's crazy that this randomly produced a chain of teasers--Fantastic Four>Moon Knight>Scarlet Witch--that seem to have logical plot progression. more
