Ed Brisson once again showed his strong understanding of Wolverine's history with Old Man Logan #34. The pacing of the entire story in Old Man Logan #34 added depth to the ongoing conflict Logan and Mariko are having with the Hand. At the same time, Brisson strengthened the relationship between Logan and Mariko as they each got used to being back in one another's lives again. All of this came together for yet another strong chapter in what has become one of the best comic books Marvel is publishing. Read Full Review

Don't pick up Old Man Logan #34 looking for a love story. The straightforward art might fool you into dismissing this as a goodies-vs-baddy comic, and a shallow read along those lines will come off underwhelming. There are much more sinister nuggets buried in Ed Brisson's script. Though unearthing them takes a little too much effort, the questions they raise about Mariko are definitely worth asking. For some reason, I just didn't connect with this story, especially as I was jumping in since it was the start of a new story arc, most of what was happening had little impact because I wasn't invested in it. No, it was NOT as bad as the current average. Granted, this rich intro of Scarlet Samurai just coasted a bit with installment (for one acceptable ish of dramatic build). And who can bear the monotony of fantastic art (besides me ;)). We learn Mariko is really, really alive. Gorgon is really, really badass. Ancient Japan has really, really many untold stories. And OML still really, really doesn't fit in to the 616.

Logan and Mariko work together to find their drug-MacGuffins and defeat Gorgon. A touch of interaction in the comic's first scene suggests with the faintest of brushstrokes that things are Complicated between them. The balance is rather forgettable fighting, but Ibraim Roberson and Carlos Lopez are more engaged with the material than the last art team. That makes a positive difference. Someday Ed Brisson must learn that scowly guys growling stuff like "so be it" and "not so" are just the background noise of action comics; it takes engaging characterization or novel spectacles (with good art) to make these stories memorable.
