New Avengers #30

All in all, Bendis and Mike Deodato have shone in these AvX issues. They've certainly elevated both Bendis series toward the end of the writer's long run that has been full of ups and downs. For me, these issues have done exactly what I wanted them to do – tell solid enough stories about satellite situations in this “war” while not making me feel like I will need to remember this thing or that thing, or have to pull these issues out as well when I re-read Avengers Vs. This is one of the strongest tie-ins I have read in the AvX series as Bendis chose to hang out in the periphery of the ‘big fight' and create some great moments that readers of New Avengers have been waiting for. The ending of this issue leaves the future of a major character in limbo, and I know for certain I'll be picking up next month's installment to find out what happens next. Read Full Review

Marvel NOW is still a month away, but we're already starting to see how the Marvel Universe will be changing after the end of ‘Avengers Vs. X-Men'. I'm interested to see what other changes could occur before the final shots are fired. Read Full Review

Still, judged as an issue of "New Avengers" rather than an installment of crossover, it does work, and it's going to have consequences that will presumably be explored sooner rather than later. There's enough "AvX" content to justify the banner, but at this point it's back to doing its own stories -- and to be honest, it's all the better for it. Read Full Review

New Avengers entertains but not as much as it frustrates. The book can't escape Marvel's severe mishandling of the conflict between the Avengers and the X-Men, and what Bendis is teasing for Luke Cage is by far the most disappointing of all possible outcomes for the character. I know there's no salvaging Avengers Vs. X-Men, but I can only hope Bendis reverses course with Luke Cage in the few issues he has left on this series. Read Full Review

While the character moments for Luke certainly stand out as noteworthy, the rest of this issue becomes an exercise in pummeling forgetful villains. Brian Michael Bendis has put Luke through several large-scale events arguably more life-affecting than Avengers vs. X-Men, so it feels strange for it to provoke such a profound decision from him. The art is bland with it basically just being a bunch of faces with with open mouths and that's the main problem with this issue as a whole. It's just a fight book. There's no point in existing because it furthers the story in no way. Couldn't Cage just wait until the end of the fight v Cyclops to decide he was done? Did we really need to see Frost getting taken away? We sure didn't see that with the rest of the members of the Pheonix Five. Read Full Review

I can sense the door is closing in Bendis’ Avenger era with the long overdue quitting of Luke Cage. Bendis has been writing Luke Cage FOREVER (Literally since like 2001) and this seems like a proper goodbye to one of his favorite characters
