New Avengers #15

Some of the Fear Itself crossovers have been hit or miss. This one might not have a huge impact with the main series but there's no reason to complain about that. Bendis gives us his usual shining moments of the characters actually being human. This means we get scenes of the team getting to hang out along with the humor Bendis is known for writing. Deodato of course manages to wow us with his incredible art, depicting both the calmer scenes along with the intense action the crossover calls for. Of course he makes Squirrel Girl look pretty amazing. And that's where the issue really shines. We get to see Squirrel Girl in action. If you haven't been able to appreciate her for the fighting skills she possesses, this issue is sure to convince you of how formidable she is. I didn't think I'd give a Squirrel Girl comic a five out of five but I had no choice. The comic was fun and entertained me and that's exactly what I want in a comic. Read Full Review

All in all, I'm glad Bendis is pulling back on the Oral History stuff. Plus, I don't think Squirrel Girl has ever been drawn more elegantly than by Deodato. This issue, and character for that matter, may not suit everyone's tastes, but I found it possessed enough for me to be satisfied by it. Read Full Review

Deodato has joined the New Avengers and thats a good thing. He is a breakout talent. I was going to cancel this series, but I may keep buying it just because of this artist. This issue he experiments with crosshatching which gives a textured feel to the shadowy part of his illustrations. Thats great stuff. Read Full Review

The main flaw with this issue is the art, as Mike Deodato's reliance of CG models is more apparent than ever. There's an eerie, lifeless quality to many panels as the shading does little to hide the digital backbone. Many panels feature characters as silhouettes. While generally more effective in conveying action and motion, the sheer prevalence of these silhouetted characters diminishes the overall aesthetic impact. This series needs to see Deodato return to the more nuanced, detailed work of his Thunderbolts days. Read Full Review

Artist Mike Deodato has done some solid work for Marvel over the years, and he's no stranger to Bendis' Avengers, but I'm not sure he was the right choice as artist for this spotlight. Squirrel Girl's softer, nicer side is lost here. Her likeability factor doesn't come through in the art. Deodato employs a lot of shadow and silhouettes here, and the central character just doesn't call for so much darkness. Some of the action sequences are rather vague as well. Read Full Review

Holy crap! are you kidding me?! What was I NOT expecting, going into this issue? I was not expecting Squirrel-Girl to open up a serious can of whip ass. She opened up 8 cans on Sin's army (and Wolverine). Bravo to Bendis for establishing this character this way, I love it. Deodato is fantastic on art as well. This is, and has been, beyond ANY doubt, the better of Bendis' current two Avengers series. It's not deep or metaphysical at all; it's actually been something of a shallow series based solely on excitement, tension building, conversations, and shock moments. But you know what? It's fun, and it's nearly impossible for me to just read one issue without moving on to the next! Hard to fault Bendis for that.
