Minimum Carnage: Alpha #1

Admittedly, I'm not the biggest Carnage fan. I think he's a remnant of the '90s "EXTREME" era that's best left forgotten. I wasn't sure what to expect when Minimum Carnage was announced, but this isn't a bad start to what looks to be an interesting arc. Read Full Review

Now THIS is what I'm talking about! That's how you start a crossover. We got a quick introduction into each characters mind, for anyone who is only reading one series, we got to see them act on their own first before we saw them team up, and Carnage was built up like the threat he should be. Plus, we got a few unanswered questions like Carnage's tie with the tiny people and who exactly they want killed, which should keep people interested. After Bunn's lackluster start to Venom, I'm really enjoying what he and Yost have started here, hopefully they can keep the momentum going. Though this cross-over will pale in comparison to some of the fantastic work thats happening right now, this issue isnt bad, just average. If average is enough to hit your radar, pick it up. Not only is Zeb Wells absent from this Carnage adventure, so is artist Clayton Crain. But that shift is really for the best. Lan Medina's darker style better suits the realm Venom and Scarlet Spider inhabit. Medina is able to deliver a fitting blend of super-heroic action and detailed, lain back character designs. His Kletus Casaday doesn't resemble the gangly serial killer we've come to know, but otherwise this series is already a significant improvement over the murky, inconsistent visuals of Carnage USA. Carnage and crossovers feel like a natural fit. With the new VENOM and SCARLET SPIDER series, it's great to pit these three against each other. The decision not to included Spider-Man here was the right choice as well. It's hard to say what will happen next and that's important to get readers to want to come back for more. There were some issues with the art, in particular the way Carnage himself appeared. We also have some mystery characters that looked a little familiar but will leave you scratching your head. There definitely is the potential for this series to blast off. You'll want to see what happens next to see how the coming encounter plays out. Read Full Review

If you're a Carnage fan you'll probably be picking this up, but for regular readers I would still suggest checking it out. It's a good introduction to a small event spanning two titles (three if you count the Omega book). The story is only hinted at here and leaves me wanting more. Minimum Carnage: Alpha was a good book that I enjoyed reading and I will continue to follow the story. Let's just hope Carnage's dialogue gets better"Minimum Carnage: Alpha gets 3 out of 5 stars. "Minimum Carnage: Alpha" #1 delivers all the set up for a crossover to really run from here in "Venom" and "Scarlet Spider." While Yost trumps Bunn in delivering a worthy successor to "Maximum Carnage," Lan Medina stands aloft as the winner of the book with his amazing art. Interestingly, Bunn and Vost split the writing between Venom and Scarlet Spider/Kaine, resulting in very different styles for the very different characters. Medina's clean art gives this event series an easily accesible shop-front, mirroring a cinematic layout, with enough splash moments to satiate the fanboys and girls. Read Full Review
