  If you like the idea of Hulk but want more than just smashing, this is the Hulk series for you. Mark Waid has made a great decision in taking the fact that Banner has finally come to terms with the Hulk's presence and also wants to use his intellect to try to better mankind. Hulk as part of S.H.I.E.L.D. seems like a crazy idea and that's part of what will make this series so fun. As in the movie, the idea of keeping such a destructive force in a helicarrier is an insane idea. But the idea of using the Hulk's abilities in a positive manner is brilliant and what readers want. Fans rejoiced in seeing Hulk fight alongside the heroes in The Avengers as well as the finale of AVENGERS VS X-MEN. With Leinil Yu joining Waid on this series, you know we're going to get some epic and over the top action scenes. This is a great (new) start for Hulk and Banner and I cannot wait to see what Mark Waid has planned. Read Full Review

  So far, Marvel NOW has had some books that didnt quite stack up (see Iron Man #1) and has had some books that really stood out (see Thor: God of Thunder #1.) Thankfully, but not so surprisingly, one of the most anticipated books of the entire REvolution, or whatever theyre calling it, is also one of the bestif not the best of Marvel NOW! Character focused Mark Waid and a very talented Leinil Yu make this a must read book for any fan of the Hulk and it definitely deserves a read for people that might not have liked a Hulk series up to this point.   It is rare that we see a Hulk who wants to work co-operatively with anyone else; he is typically a lone ranger. While we have seen him do this, it is obvious that he prefers to be on his own. Hulk has always straddled the line between good and destructive, so he probably wants to work alone so as to not hurt anyone else. Hopefully, Bruce Banner will make his mark on the world of inventions and be able to compete with Tony Stark. Bruce curses Tony's name in this issue and Waid hints that next month's issue will focus on a struggle between Hulk and Iron Man. Read Full Review

  Waid's master stroke lies in setting Banner free from confines of his role as a tortured pariah and letting loose the brilliant creative Genius within, albeit one who accepts that every now and then he just needs break out and smash something. Waid gives the impression that Bruce really enjoys this new status quo, and the feeling's infectious; I can't remember a time that I was so entertained by a Hulk comic. A brilliant issue for newcomers and a welcome breath of fresh hair for long-time Gamma fans, Indestructible Hulk is a perfect example of how to get a relaunch just right. Read Full Review

  Indestructible Hulk ranks up there with Thor: God of Thunder as one of the stars of Marvel NOW!. Waid doesn't just hit on a winning concept here. He and Yu nail it in the execution as well. They manage something that's new but also feels perfectly natural for the character. It's also a new status quo that allows Banner to play just as much of a role in things as the Hulk, if not more.   This first issue has a lot going for it, and there's a distinct place in the market for a smart, action-oriented Hulk book, and Indestructible Hulk looks like a safe bet to fill that niche. Waid's usually brilliant writing takes center stage here, and the fact that he wisely focuses on making Bruce Banner as interesting and exciting as his big, green counterpart goes a long way to making this a book that should appeal to longtime Hulk fans, as well as those who have only recently been captivated by the possibilities of a character with this type of duality.   The future of the Hulk is bright! Judging from this introductory issue, Waid's run on Hulk could concievably eclipse his great runs on Flash, Irredeemable, and Daredevil. Already teased is Hulk vs. Iron Man in issue 2 and further battles with villains across the Marvel Universe, as well as intellectual duals between Marvel's genius's are sure to keep the title interesting. Although things seem to point towards the series being filled with self-contained story's from one issue to the next (a true rarity these days), look for bigger story arcs to emerge soon. For now, add this to the other spectacular Marvel NOW! debuts like Thor: God of Thunder and Fantastic Four and I'll see you at issue 2. Read Full Review

  Mark Waid's Bruce Banner is far more reasonable and responsible than previous iterations. Even at his calmest, Bruce used to only have a one track mind. Under Waid's hand, Bruce is more relatable and makes more sense on a logistical level -- it always bothered me how a man of staunch science could work for decades to no avail without accepting a certain truth of things. Waid understands this principle, applies it liberally, and it works. Like Matt Fraction, Mark Waid is a phenomenal emotional writer. For scientists, though, emotion can often be expressed through their work, and Bruce hasn't done any work outside himself for a long time. For too long, Bruce has been a tormented soul searching for something that isn't there. That's been done. In the 'Marvel NOW!' era, he's is going to be a force of good, and a darn good one at that.   So much about Indestructible Hulk #1 makes sense it's hard not to love it. The comic takes a little bit of time to set up it's premise, but it's simple and full of new territory. The opening issue shares a duality between brain and brawn that represents the main character, and lays foundation for another great Hulk run. Hopefully, it can keep my fickle, child-like attention.   All in all, I am surprised. I was not expecting to like this book and I loved it. Marvel NOW! has had some great surprises so far (check out Thor #1 for another surprise title) but a few which have fallen a tad flat so far (such as the flagship NOW! title Uncanny Avengers). If you've ever liked the Hulk, this is a book to pick up and give it a chance. If you only liked the movie Hulk from The Avengers, you will like this book too. If you know nothing about the Hulk, this is a great starting point. Basically, this is a surprise find from the Marvel NOW! range and I am very glad I took the chance and picked this title up!   Overall, Mark Waid gives us a great first issue. I have to say it's particularly strong because he lends a lot of forward progression for Bruce Banner as a character, but it's also a great issue because it's a ton of fun packed with a ton of story. Fans of the character in the recent Avengers film will definitely want to check this one out, as it puts Banner into a similar place as he is in the cinematic universe, but fans of the character in the comics should also be reading this one as it moves Bruce forth into an exciting new era of his life.   The art as a whole was fantastic, even in the Diner scene. It is setting a tone, along with Waid's writing that I think suits this book perfectly. I am eagerly anticipating the new issue. You should check this out even if you are not a fan of the main character, because its Mark Waid. That should be reason enough considering the form he is in at the minute. Read Full Review

  I liked this issue. Not the best Marvel NOW! series I've read so far, but it was definitely good. And knowing Mark Waid, it's got a lot of potential. Though I've never been a particular fan of Yu, his style is at least very distinctive. So I'm definitely still very excited by the comic. When it comes to the Hulk, I have very particular tastes, which had kept me from reading the series for the past several years. For me, the real star is Bruce Banner, not the Hulk. I prefer the drama over the action. So I didn't like all those stories with the multiple Hulks (Red, She, Red She, Son of, Other Son of, Daughter of, etc.), and I didn't like Jason Aaron's story where Banner was the evil monster and Hulk was trying to cure himself of Banner. Those weren't for me. But this new, back to basics approach, is definitely right up my alley. This was definitely a good start to what will hopefully be a great series! Read Full Review

It's not the most amazing book out there, but the story has small noticeable changes to Bruce Banner's character.   While Leinil Yu has some slick ultra detailed pencils the storytelling is not completely there in the talking head sequences which pretty much comprise most of the book. The action scenes are explosive and are rendered fantastically. Black and white preview pages for the series will make the reader appreciate the comic more because you can see every individual line that Yu carefully drew in. Even though the comic reads like a mission state from Bruce Banner there is some fun to be had here. Given Mark Waid's track record as of late it is worth trusting him to take you along for the ride.   One of the many reasons Waid's work on Daredevil has been such a strong draw for so many is it unfolds in its own little corner of the Marvel Universe, pretty much untouched by other recent events in the shared continuity. It appears Waid and Marvel's editors are trying to do the same here, but unlike DD, readers of this new series ought to disregard what's going on with the title character in other Marvel books. It's hard to reconcile Banner's new status quo here with the Hulk who's hanging around Avengers Tower in Avengers Assemble, for example. My hope is Waid's stories will be left alone and won't dwell on what others are writing for the publisher at the moment, but given the strength (no pun intended) of the Hulk brand now and the many spinoffs and characters it's spawned as of late, I worry about... intrusions.   In a contrast to the rest of Marvel NOW! so far, "Indestructible Hulk" in very unflashy in its announcement that this a new direction for the character. It's good comics though, and yet another check in the win column for Marvel NOW! which has only had a 1-2 misses among a lot of pretty good comic runs that seem to be getting started here. If this issue is only solid yet unspectacular on its own, at the very least it is a step in the right direction as Mark Waid and Leinil Yu clearly have a fun plan for this character.   Waid has set a high bar for his work with his own oeuvre, especially with the pathos and humor of his work on "Daredevil." His challenge with "Indestructible Hulk" will be to keep his characteristic humor, but to also raise the stakes for a hero who is used to being the smartest or strongest man in the room -- and knows it. Banner is a difficult personality; after all, he's always angry despite his immense educational privilege and his gifts.   I wouldn’t say this issue knocked it out of the park, but it’s a solid start. The fact that Iron Man is instantly jumping on to the series next issue is bothersome, but that’s an issue for another month I suppose. Waid has fixed a lot of broken elements about the Hulk and Banner, but he may have added new problems yet to be scene. The story was fun, but when you starter to look at the different plot elements you can see what a Band-Aid this issue is. Let’s hope it doesn’t lose its adhesiveness in the shower huh?
