PICK THIS UP! Seriously, I don't know how much more I can recommend this comic. This is a perfect comic book! The writing is tremendous, the artwork fantastic, and there isn't a dull moment to be had. Whether you're a fan of the character, Disney enthusiast, or casual reader looking for something, go and buy Figment. It's series made of pure fun and imagination. There are a lot of times that I find it difficult to grab hold of a new story in a meaningful way, but Figment #1 has managed to do just that. It's a book that is meant for everyone, not just kids or Disney fans. I can't wait to read more and am becoming more and more excited about this comic book merger between Disney and Marvel. “Figment” #1 is a book that could be quickly written off. However, this first issue presents a fantasy/sci-fi world that stacks up against many creator-owned comics of similar ilk. Marvel has demonstrated a strong willingness to set up hot, upcoming talent on their lower tier books, and it's great to see the publisher applying the same mentality here. While Zub certainly creates an interesting backstory for this licensed property, his greatest success lies in his and Andrade's ability to tell a story that does not depend on the dialogue to understand what's going on. This is particularly helpful for parents seeking comics for their younger readers (at least this one) who may not be able to handle the level of the text in the speech bubbles but will enjoy the story nonetheless. FIGMENT is a delightful romp through the world of imagination that will please audiences both young and old. You may not know the character, but that really doesn't matter, since Writer Jim Zub gives you a very solid opening issue and introduction to these characters and the adventure they're all about to take. The art here is also fantastic as well. While there's a few very minor problems with the issue, dealing with medium shots and who the book is intended for. Figment #1is a solid debut issue from a talented writer and an artist that is perfectly suited to this kind of story. Readers with no prior knowledge of the Figment character will not be missing any information required to enjoy this issue and I can vouch that this is safe to read with children of any age. There aren't a lot of comics that can be enjoyed by different age groups and I highly recommend if you've got kids that you pick this one up and share it with them. The Bottom Line: While the comic falls short of genuine world-building by relying on stock situations and supporting characters, the main characters are appealing in their design and familiar set-up. The comic is beautiful to look at and balances “reality” with imagination as appropriate thematically to the book, but it feels a bit bland as if the creators really want next issue to be one where we'll see the story they really want to tell. After a rough opening ten pages, Zub and Andrade really find the sweet spot for their book. With Figment and Blair's relationship as the cornerstone of the series they have something solid and energizing to work with and though the first third of the book is a bit of a bore, by the end it's full of promise. I've been scouring the web to see if there is any sort of Figment relaunch or Disney news. I hate to come down so hard on this book, but I am missing it's purpose. It's not the worst thing I read, but I was hoping for something more imaginative. It feels like Disney dragging Marvel down, instead of Marvel raising Disney up. Read Full Review

There are times when my cynicism gets the better of me. Upon hearing that the Disney Epcot ride, Journey Into Imagination, was going to be developed into a comic book, I felt confident that it could easily become one of the worst comics I would read in a long time. Keeping in mind that I haven't been on the ride since 1985, I failed to see how any writer could make a little purple dragon of imagination into a comic book series I'd want to read.
