At first reading, I wasn't that impressed with this book. Bucky looking for his past is as used as a story as Red Hood being angry at Batman. Lanzing and Kelly have used the usual desire of the character [Bucky] to change the perspective of the whole Fisk files. As such, this is an interesting book that stand out against the usual superhero ideal of trying to take down the bad guy. Read Full Review

Devil's Reign: Winter Soldier #1 is a solid issue that stands on its own. While it's part of Devil's Reign, it feels more like a one-shot that will lead to something down the line. It's a perfect example of a character's involvement in an event enhancing their story instead of just being a part of the event. I loved this! the writing was phenomenal and the look of this book had me taking a moment after every page to admire the artwork. I liked this so much that at the end it says continued in captain America #0 well it looks like it's m going to have to add that to my pull list

I really dig this issue. The art/coloring is superb. The contrast between light and dark and the shadows are amazing in this book. I feel the writing was pretty good as well but the art is the real star imo. It definitely left me wanting more. I'm excited to see how this story unfolds in Cap.

9 times out of 10, when I say a comic puts style over substance, I mean it in a bad way. Welcome to that 10th time, when I decide great style trumps weak substance. This is a visual triumph, for a start. Amazing layouts, blocking, characters, shadows, colors -- just gorgeous all around. Nico Leon's been a favorite of mine for a long time and it's great to see him excel with darker material. The script does a great job setting up the art, providing a potent conflict between two characters each portrayed in an intriguing, novel way. It's in the details that a sense of pretension creeps in. Some of the allusions whiz over my head because I don't know enough Bucky continuity. But some I grasp entirely, seeing that they're just ther e to make the authors and readers feel smart. I mean, wielding an American flag as a weapon? That's the illustration for "pretentious" in the comic book dictionary. But there's *just enough* substance alongside the literary wanking. Bucky *does* come across as demon-haunted and his mysterious new adversaries *do* seem intriguing. A great read by itself and great foreshadowing for what's to come. more

Not sure how I feel about this. This is written by the same guys who will write Captain America #0 and proceed with the Sentinel of Liberty book, Steve's book. On one hand, I appreciate that they seem to have a plan with Bucky who's been generally ignored these last few years at Marvel. On the other hand, the tease in Timeless where Bucky is shown pitted against Steve, coupled with this, doesn't fill me with confidence. I also had some problems with the inner narration from Bucky, I always feel like Lanzing & Kelly want to punch above their weight with pretentious dialogue that ultimately doesn't mean anything. But I still managed to enjoy this somehow, overall. So, I don't know, maybe I am a bit generous with the rating here as I missed an ything focused on Bucky really, but this was interesting, at least. P.S.: I liked the fact they acknowledged Bucky killing Nomad and that that's haunting him. more

Not reading Devil's Reign currently (yet), but this was a super solid one-shot. Really nice art from Leon alongside an intriguing story from Lanzing & Kelly. This was especially cool as a prelude to what they have coming in their Captain America book. Really looking forward to seeing what they do there.
