    Comic Watch - Tyler Davis

    Nov 16, 2023

Dark X-Men#4 is filled with tension, atmosphere, and delicate character writing that brings a sharp edge to the themes and story of this series without bloating out its very limited page count with filler. Foxe and Scharf deserve to see this team grow beyond just a mini-series within the Fall of X. Read Full Review

Scharf delivers some beautifully detailed art in the issue. The visual style is a perfect companion to the dark tone of the story. Read Full Review

    ComicBook.com - Jamie Lovett

Dark X-Men #4 starts on a strange foot. Gambit touches base with his wife Rogue, who hasn't appeared previously in the series, seemingly as a reason for him to recap the series thus far. Given this is the penultimate installment of a five-issue series, that hardly seems necessary. Once that's out of the way, Steve Foxe, Jonas Scharf, and Frank Martin kick things into a higher gear with a mercilessness typically reserved for horror stories rather than superheroes. So, so good. The writing is amazing, the art is fantastic, the story is engaging...I'm so sad there's only one more issue left. This should've gone on for at LEAST one more arc.

I don't know if it's because I've been handing out a lot of 7's and 7.5's while reading some of the miniseries from Fall of X, but this I ended up liking this one more than I thought I would. Easily the best issue of the series for me thus far, as everything just clicked a lot better for me here. Foxe's writing is the best its been here, especially shining in the beginning with Rogue and Gambit, as well as the brief Chasm appearance. I also enjoyed the pages with the evil Madelyne Pryor, as she was absolutely brutal in this issue.

Once it gets past the initial Rogue scene, this is a speedy, eventful rollercoaster. The plot's so interesting that this fast pace works fine. The art is still shadowy and heavy-lined, and it proves to be an excellent tool for gore and horror. While the characterization isn't all that insightful, the conversations and conflicts between the characters are excellent.
