Champions #11

Overall this was another great issue for the Champions. Their world has been turned upside down. We're seeing how they cope and find the strength to go on. You can tell this issue is a crossover filler, but it's a better version of a filler issue and does a lot to build up its characters during this over-arching Marvel story. Champions is a book with a lot of heart! It has the perfect mix of characterization, drama, action, and comedy. Waid loves these characters and it shows. Give him half a chance and he could have you fall in love with them too. Despite half the team missing from this issue due to the Secret Empire event. Waid still doesn't miss a beat and keeps the book flowing. And in this day and age where consistency seems to be an endangered species, Champions always comes off as a refreshing read. As a stand alone story this is a powerful tale. We are given a look at the limitations and humanity behind heroes. For those unaware, this issue takes place after the events of Secret Empire and SE: Uprising where Ms Marvel and Nova and Cyclops have been replaced with Wasp, Ironheart, Patriot, and Falcon. Steve Rodgers has sent a fleet of Hydra ships to destroy Las Vegas for harboring revolutionaries. Completely destroying the city and everyone within. The Champions are searching the ruined city for survivors. Everyone is dealing with grief and the juxtaposition of the powerful Hulk trying desperately to put out flames before failing and falling to his knees in defeat is amazing. Seeing another moment where Patriot has to stop after realizi ng he is unprepared for the carnage is a moment you do not see often. All of it done very well. There is a problem though. The issue is a direct continuation of the previously mentioned titles. It does not connect with the previous issue where a smaller team is searching for the missing Kamala Khan. That thread is left unresolved and picked up within the pages of Secret Warriors and Uprising giving us a confusing time jump. This issue as well creates a thread that will never be resolved. Both close important gaps but throw off the flow of the series. This is of course not anything new. Daredevil had a fight with demons in the subway to become part of Inferno from the pages of X-Men that derailed from the series temporarily. X-Men had confusing moments tied in to Bloodties. It has been happening since the late 80's and continued since, but still just as frustrating. It also means this important moment that showed the horror of Rodger's decision is lost within the pages of Champions when it should be a part of Secret Empire. It shows just how horrible the Hydra take over has become. It shows what a villain he is. So I am torn. This is a great issue that is well done, but completely out of place. more

I think this has been the best issue of the series. The art is still just alright, but this was definitely a step up. I do agree with some reviews about the politics. The whole white privilege remark could have just been left out. Other than that it was an enjoyable read and a decent tie in to secret empire. This managed to keep it on my pull list.

The Champions team up with a clutch of other teen heroes to search, almost entirely without success, for Las Vegas survivors. Mark Waid's script includes some valiant stabs at tragic characterization; it's the one made with Amadeus Cho, of all people, that *really* strikes the mark. This issue pins an alarmingly high and specific number of fatalities on the airstrike Stevil ordered - nearly 700,000 people died in Vegas. Though that's sobering, one of the team's responses - to construct a hypothetical strawman who's willing to condone/ignore this genocidal act and then rip on that strawman - is misguided and cowardly. Their rage at Stevil and Hydra is a much better response; I wish Mr. Waid had focused solely on that and explicitly tied it t o the kids' willingness to throw in with Natasha's assassination plans in the wider event. more

Less than the sum of the parts, unfortunately...but the wasp/Viv dynamic was really nice. A good direction for the book when we're out of the tie-in.

When Captain America punched Hitler in the face on the cover of his first issue that was before America had entered the war. It was a piece of propaganda where two Jewish men where showing their frustration over what was happening over seas. If you are not a fan of people using comics to make social commentary you may not actually like comics. It has always been that way and will continue to be that way.
