A Comic Book Blog - Geoff Arbuckle

    May 19, 2012

A particularly fantastic scene takes place between X-23 and Finesse. Here are two characters that act almost like the Data and Mr. Spock of the series. They struggle to make personal connections. One was created to be a machine and follow orders, which usually includes assassinations. The other is the daughter of a villain and is so coldly observant and amazingly intelligent. They share a scene about the Phoenix and X-23′s confusion over her role and where she falls in terms of her feelings. In a lot of ways, X-23 is going through a growth spurt on an emotional level. This is exactly what Gage has done so well in 30 issues of Avengers Academy. He's been able to pull the right strings at the right time to make the reader continue to care about these character on deeper and deeper levels. Read Full Review

There's just always so much going on with Avengers Academy that it's one of the first books you want to read when a new issue is in your stack, and AA #30 is no exception. It's just compelling character drama, the kind that can make an iffy "event" good. Read Full Review

As each month passes Christos Gage continues to show everyone how it is done. Avengers Academy #30 is yet further proof that this is the best Avengers title and one of Marvel's best comics on the stands. This issue does a great job fleshing out the conflict between the Avengers and X-Men as we finally get to see both sides given equal amount of time to voice their concerns and opinions. IGN - Jesse Schedeen

Tom Grummett's artwork is decent, if not particularly sleek or eye-catching. He handles the dialogue-heavy scenes and Shaw vs. Avengers action well, but the larger battle scenes are comparatively flat and bland. How his work will hold up now that the various character factions have converged on the battlefield remains to be seen. Read Full Review

The stuff with Mettle and the rock girl and the interactions between Finesse and X-23 are great. Fantastic writing by Christos Gage. Too bad the Sebastian Shaw element of the past two issues is completely unnecessary
