Amazing Spider-Man #8

Slott and Gage are clearly building to Spider-Verse, but its certainly not coming at the expense of the main AMAZING SPIDER-MAN title. While we might not be getting huge plot developments and high-stakes, were getting some great character work and, quite frankly, the dust is STILL settling from SUPERIOR SPIDER-MANs massive shakeup, so its relaxing to actually have a status quo to return to. Kamala and Peters story is great fun to read and juxtaposes strongly against the savagery of the EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE back-up, but the two dont clash and are both, ultimately, entertaining. This was an unexpectedly emotional and tonally different backup story from the lighthearted main story. I like Dan Slott's narration told from Mayday's perspective. She does sound like a teen girl who blames herself and feels torn between listening to her mom and doing the brave thing. Can Mayday please be a major character in Spider-Verse? Read Full Review

Meanwhile, the backup issue is great, and it takes a regularly lighthearted character such as Mayday Parker to a whole different level. It's really sad to see how a things come to be, but I'm glad Spider-Girl just became an very important role in the Spider-Verse story. Given that Amazing Spider-Man #8 is the final prelude before Spider-Verse it could have probably done more to draw in readers and outline the stakes. The main story does end up feeling a little like it is filling space before the big event. For what it is though, each of the stories works as a fun, readable adventure in their own right, with just enough in plot developments in the main story to make the book seem significant. With Ms. Marvel, Spider-Girl, and even a no-name villain from Spidey's past, it's easy to enjoy Amazing Spider-Man #8. No worlds are saved, few characters undergo massive change, but it's a rollicking adventure filled with good cheer and a decent sense of humor. Sometimes that's enough. The backup feature, as with last month's story, manages to intrigue and upset in how it takes a fairly lighthearted character (in this case, Mayday Parker), and engulfs her world in darkness and bloodshed. At least this Spider-Girl now has genuine stakes in the Spider-Verse conflict, but is it necessary to keep putting these characters through the wringer in each and every backup? We already have a good grasp on how terrible Morlun's family is and how dire the situation has become. Read Full Review

Once again, The Amazing Spider-Man #8 carries an Edge of Spider-Verse story " the cover itself features the second story overthe main one. The pacing for this issue's mainstory feltlittle rushed, especially towards the end. The end result is a story that might have some bearing on the future, but it feels more like a detour at this point while Spider-Verse takes over. Hopefully, things return to normal next month, whether by Gage or Slott's hand " and if there was anything immediately major that this issueshowed " it's that Spider-Man's in pretty capable hands. Amazing Spider-Man #8 is a largely forgettable story that continues to stall for the start of "Spider-Verse." The relaunch of Amazing Spider-Man has yet to find its emotional hook or a starring character, one would hope it would be Peter Parker, and this particular issue does little to mitigate that. The Villain

I was really impressed by this issue. The interactions between Ms Marvel and Spider-Man are better. Both characters have a lot of similarities anyway so it is really cool to see them paired together. I was also really impressed by Clayton Cole making an appearance in the present after Dan Slott created him for the Learning to Crawl arc that took place in the past. I'm really looking forward to seeing what will happen with him now that he will begin collaborating with Peter Parker.

Not bad! This Spider-Verse side story was brief, but better, than the previous one. And the main story with Kamala ended pretty cool as well.
