Amazing Spider-Man #679.1

It's hard to believe the "Point One" issues are still coming out. The idea of using this numbering system is unnecessary. The idea is for this to be a good jumping on point but you have to wonder how many 'new' readers would even be aware. Slapping a big "New Jumping On Point" on the cover would work better. In this issue's defense, it does serve to introduce new readers to the idea of Horizon Labs, the place Peter Parker now works. It's not all recap information for regular readers as we get more on the mysterious "Number Six" working at the lab (who we discovered his identity during Spider-Island). It's a fun issue and the action is self-contained. There are some developments and new plots created but after the previous two-part time travel story, it's more of a way for us to catch our breath. In closing, this book is a lot of fun. Slott has always captured to spirit of your friendly neighborhood wall-crawler with a great amount of ease, and always cranks up the nerd to 11 when he's writing. And despite a few"questionable choices in the art department, it's mostly pleasing to look at. The biggest issue I have with the book is that it ships THREE TIMES this month, and that hurts a guy in the wallet, especially when two of them will be $3.99. While this issue is a much more palatable $2.99, it makes it more difficult to budget for this book. How about a break Marvel? Read Full Review

Ultimately, this issue is a success but only a mild one. When the series is only just coming off the back of one of its best and biggest storylines in years, there's a sense the same elements it featured so heavily -- evil scientists and the employees of Horizon Labs -- should perhaps rotate out. To be fair, it's not enough of a problem to quit the book over but it also can't help feeling a bit like more of the same. Read Full Review
