All-New X-Men #8

So, All New X-Men #8 is a feast for the eyes. David Marquez makes his mark on the title with the best looking issue so far. Between him and Bendis they have addressed Angel in an engaging way. Plot elements move forward and the book continues to deliver nice surprises. Fusing melodrama, action and intrigue, Bendis and Marquez deliver another excellent instalment of this must read X-title. The novelty of the past X-Men coming to the future may have ended but the story has just grown even better each issue and this one is no change. The X-Men haven't had so much writing talent putting together such beautiful stories in quite awhile. Read Full Review

All New X-Men is quite a difficult book to review as the fact that it never seems to put a foot wrong makes finding new ways to rave about its quality increasingly hard to find. Still, that's purely a problem for critics " as a reader it makes this book one of the soundest $3.99 investments on the stands. Continuing with the excellent character work and exemplary visuals as well as once again moving the story forward to exciting new places, All New X-Men #8 is another winning chapter in one of Marvel NOWs greatest titles. All-New X-Men is a title that has many plot threads and a ton of potential and Bendis is proving up to the task. His excitement about these characters is palpable when you read the book, and despite the burden it is on my wallet, I must say that I don't find myself complaining about the accelerated released schedule of this series. It’s not all just emotional games though, that’s no fun. There is a fantastic moment in which both Kitty and Bobby imitate a conversation between Captain America and Beast. This makes the issue worth the pick up alone, I swear. But there is a lot of other really great stuff put into this issue and it couldn’t have had better timing on its release. This title is easily one of the best of the Marvel NOW! initiative, if not THE best. While Uncanny Avengers is widely considered to be the flagship Marvel NOW! title, one could argue the case for this book. Not since Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men has an X-book been this good. With some great character development and some heavy hitting cameos, this issue of All-New X-Men is nearly as impressive as the others. While there aren't as many stand out pages as there have been in the past, this series continues to impress with every installment, and the next two weeks are going to be a bit slower, due to not having another to read until then. Overall, this may be one of the best written comic on the stands at the moment. Bendis has a great feel for every single character that he writes. No wonder he has quite a few X books on the go at the moment. This is a massive time for the X-Men, and it is great to see that they have the right man behind them in moving forward. If you are a fan of these characters then I strongly recommend you guys get involved with this series. Since this is a character driven book, it greatly helps that one of best character artists in the biz is drawing it. David Marquez draws people talking better than almost anybody. There's so much expression and emotion in every panel it brings a tear to my eye (figuratively). It's truly superb. I'd love to see him draw an Adventures of Young Iceman and Kitty Pride book (literally), because that scene absolutely steals the show. That said, his work isn't without a few missteps. Some of the action is a little confusing and we lose the background a bit too often. Still, you'd be hard pressed to find a better looking book than All-New X-Men #8 this week. It's slick, no doubt. The pace of the series seems to have slowed down a bit though. After teasing us with that brief scuffle between Past and Present Cyclops, Bendis might be going in a different direction altogether as it looks like we'll be seeing more of what Mystique has planned sooner rather than later. ALL-NEW X-MEN continues to be one of my favorite Marvel NOW! titles. Even when an issue feels like there isn't an incredible amount that happens, you'll find yourself hanging onto every panel and piece of dialogue. I hate to think that at some point, this series has to come to an end. We can't have the young X-Men around forever. That's part of what makes everything so volatile. There's simply no telling what might happen next. Bendis keeps delivering issue after issue and David Marquez does a great job depicting all the characters, young and old. This is indeed a series I'm extremely thankful for the twice-a-month schedule. I can't get enough. Read Full Review

The art was a bit off for me in this issue. Usually the art is top notch in this book but it took a noticeable step back in this issue. I really noticed on the last panel when Jean Grey looked physically distorted. Not sure why the art took such a step back but hopefully it gets back to par in the next issue. Read Full Review

Has Jean Grey ever been so chilling? I definitely did not see that coming! And it just gets me more excited for this series! Bendis has clearly put a lot of thought into all of the young X-Men and what roles they would play. I was worried that Angel would get the short straw and not have much to do, but Bendis is using him to great effect as the lone dissenter of the group. And I never would have seen this coming for Jean Grey! I thought Bendis' idea to give her telepathy was just a story element he wanted to use, but it looks like he has major plans for how the early onset of telepathy is actually reshaping Jean as a character. That is fascinating stuff. The fight scene against HYDRA was fine (and very, very well drawn), and the scene with the Avengers was too short, but Bendis absolutely nailed all of the emotions and personalities of the young X-Men (as well as a few of the older X-Men. The Kitty/Iceman scene was fun). Read Full Review

The notion of dipping into the past and bringing the original X-Men into their future sounded like a novelty comic book to me. I didn't expect the story to last very long or to be terribly interesting. I expected a scene or two that was exceptionally poignant or maybe a memorable line or two. More often than not, however, the balance of great art and energizing story present in "All-New X-Men" #8 has been the norm for this series. Bendis' work is more effective in larger chunks, but there's enough going on in every issue of this series to provide a solid dose of entertainment in every issue. Read Full Review

All-New X-Men #8 was able to dedicate time in developing Angel into something more than a joke character. Small character beats such as the Young Cyclops standing up to Captain America and the mock banter of Kitty Pride and Iceman gave this issue some additional weight. Unfortunately the snail-like pace of that Bendis is taking the story is finally getting in the way of the story progressing naturally. It does not help matters that the Avengers are treated as nothing more than set pieces to stand in the background and say nothing. Hopefully what Jean Grey did at the end of the issue is a clue that the story will start seeing some forward progression. Read Full Review

All in all this issue seemed like a miss and a placeholder until the Mystique issue that's coming next, which was weird since she put her plan in action in the last issue. Anyway, here's hoping the next issue is better. Read Full Review

It was just a matter of time. Sooner or later the Avengers get to know things and to act consequently. It's not just a commercial move, it's what would happen in a vibrant world where all these series coexist, and Marvel is an expert of this. And Bendis is, too. So we first have a really awesome fight in front of the Avengers Tower between Angel(s) and HYDRA (with those neat onomatopoeia between panels) and then the, surprisingly not physical, confrontation between Avengers and X-Men. The whole thing is written in a funny way to entertain the reader while making progress for the story, and the ending is unpredictably shocking and frightening. Bendis is killing it here, man.
