All-New X-Men #19

It wouldn't be realistic for the X-Men to always have to go toe to toe with tier-one level threats, and their skirmish against a group of violent religious fanatics gives them something to consider while they remain here in the present. How the extremist group will factor into the story or to the X-Men Universe at large isn't immediately clear, though there's enough reason to believe they will factor into the story arc. The possible addition of another mutant to the team could also spell more trouble and adventure, and the prospect is one to get excited about. It's reminiscent of the Chris Claremont stories that grabbed current events and topics relevant to the readership and placed them within the panels. Read Full Review

This continues to be one of the best Marvel titles on the shelf these days, and with Brandon Peterson filling in this month, its a cant miss. Bendis continues to show what a great story teller he is through his work on this title, and the art is consistently top shelf. An all around excellent title. Read Full Review

It's hard to say anything negative about a Bendis book. He's delivered top quality imaginative series for years and All-New X-Men #19 is no exception. He's definitely perfected the voice of these characters and the series has been one of the most interesting X-books. This issue clears up any worries for fans who thought that the book might deteriorate in quality following the end of Battle of the Atom. If you are an x-fan the next few issues of this series look to be exciting and most certainly will lay the foundation for the next big 'X-event' coming down the pipeline. Read Full Review

We’re also taking a break from Immonen’s work for a few issues, this being the first of Peterson’s minute run on the All New title. It’s not bad art; in fact technically speaking it’s quite good. There’s a lot of detail put into it and even in the more busy panels, there’s no shortcuts taken, but despite the overall talent within the art, it doesn’t fit into the flow of the All New atmosphere. A lot of it is mostly from the change in colourist as well, Marte Gracia’s colours are usually much more vibrant, and this issue seems much darker. It fails to compliment the light witty humour that the X-Men bring. The issue feels a lot darker and a lot more serious, but when reading the dialogue it doesn’t feel that way at all. It feels like a completely different All New X-Men issue that we’re used to. Read Full Review

All-New X-Men #19 isn't a bad comic, though the art frequently leaves a lot to be desired. It's more that this series is lacking in the excitement and ambition that defined it prior to Battle of the Atom. Hopefully that will change quickly enough when the crossover begins. Read Full Review

What this has become is a book I've really enjoyed before, butafter ‘Battle of the Atom, ithas really let me down with a lackluster and not amazing looking experience. Hopefully this is just the transitional stage before we enter into whatever happens next – which I hope has nothingto do with The Pacifiers.Why they're even still around as a villainous group astounds me. In the early pages of reading this, I actually entertained the notion that maybe this was some sort of gimmick story that needed to be read backwards to be understood. The dialogue consistently seemed non sequitur and apropos of nothing. Being that the medium is built upon the concept of sequencing, this was not a good thing. To reference one of Beast's quotes in the issue, I didn't feel like two pages of my book were stuck together so much as that a bunch of sentences got mixed up during the printing. In some cases, the stilted nature stemmed from Bendis trying to work in some clever idea or character moment that really didn't work in the context of what was said before or after. Perhaps as a result of Bendis' jumbled narrative, the art se ems to suffer the same issues. Take the opening sequence: hoodie girl walking in the middle of the street, unexplained red light behind, she appears startled at something ahead, she peeks around a corner that suddenly appears in middle of the street, she runs in middle of street, is surprised to see she is running toward a large group of heavily armored men (apparently not what she had originally spied and ran from), she screams no, she is in weird bent over pose and men are suddenly 50 feet closer. Anyway, there were several instances where the visual storytelling was weird like this. Many of the compositions within the panels also seemed a little dated--definite 90's vibe. Peterson was in fact an artist on Uncanny and other X-titles in the 90's. It's nice that he's still finding work, but I don't think he's a great fill-in artist for Immonen. more

Whoa. This was a real steaming pile from Bendis. The artwork is pretty, but come one BMB, you can do better. Your Uncanny from last week was great, but this really smells.
