Carl has shot and killed Shane. His one time hero has turned into a threat when he pointed a gun at his father Rick. Now the group mourn their former leader yet there’s a sense of relief that he’s gone because of how unstable he became. The survivors turn to Rick to lead them to safety. As winter sets in, Rick and the survivors discover that the walkers all around them are the least of their worries.
This issue really starts to display Rick Grimes is more of a leadership role now that Shane is gone. W
e also see the debut of Tyreese in this issue. One thing I enjoy about reading the comics is seeing the differences between the show and the books. In this case, the debut of Tyreese. Additionally, I love how this book focuses more on how the apocalypse is affecting them mentally rather than the danger that is looming around them. One example of that is how quickly it changed Shane as a person. In this issue, that is put further on display in the conversation between Rick and Tyreese and what they have done so far to survive. People change when society crumbles, and not all of them change for the better. This issue we also see a change in artists. However, that didn’t affect anything much as it continues to be fantastic. Especially so with colors now being highlighted in these reprints. I can’t wait for the next issue!

The first arc of the Walking Dead wrapped up beautifully and this new arc kicks off almost as well. The group are now trying to move on to a new camp. New and interesting characters are introduced there is great dialogue between the new character and Rick. Then there is a pretty big bomb dropped to wrap up the issue.

It is in this issue that Rick Grimes officially steps into the leader position for the group. His first major act is to galvanize the grip into vacating the camp and heading away from walker-filled Atlanta. While out on the road, he encounters Tyreese, and the two alpha males become fast friends.
An issue ago, Rick told Carl that killing another human being should always be different from merely taking out a walker. And yet in this issue Tyreese confesses that he felt no guilt in pummeling his daughter’s near-rapist to death. Way more intriguing than Rick and Tyreese’s hilariously drawn out and way overcomplicated showdown with two roamers is there poignant dialogue about how the post-Apocalyptic world they reside in changes them.
Rick shares how his best friend ended up a deranged shadow of his former self, Tyreese talked about how a sweet old man pre-Apocalypse could become a rapist once the dead started rising, and Tyreese even admitted that under some circumstances he does not feel remorse for killing another human being. This conversation begs the question: Are monsters CREATED by the conditions pertaining to the cataclysmic end of society, or were those monsters always there lurking just beneath the surface of a facade maintained by an orderly society? It’s probably a combination of the two possibilities, but one thing is for sure regardless. People change when society crumbles, and not all of them (such as Glenn) change for the better. more

The change in art is jarring. I miss the first artist.
