Tales Of Honor #1

Now, I'm not huge on military science fiction. This isn't by choice " I'm just not particularly well versed in the genre (I think Ender's Game is about as deep into it as I've gotten), however Tales of Honor #1 was just a delight to read, with great characters, a three-dimensional universe and a generously deep source from which to derive material. It's also rather exciting to be able to acquaint myself with the series long before it becomes something much bigger down the line, which, if everything else is done as well as the comic, is a practical certainty. Overall Tales of Honor is a solid introduction to a multi-decade spanning series. It's impossible to relay the full scope of novels in a single issue of a comic but it appears like Matt Hawkins and Jung-Geun Yoon are approaching the material with the utmost respect and that will surely go a long way in ensuring the true flavor of the universe shines through. While this series may be a little heavy on the military strategy discussion for a casual reader, fans of sci-fi war stories should definitely pick up this first issue. I will definitely keep on reading this series, and I'm interested to see more about the game and the movie too. I couldn't say whether or not fans of the book series will like it. They might love it or they might hate it or even somewhere in-between. Since I've never read the books, I don't think it's for me to say. Having never been a reader of the novels this comic series is based on, I find myself interested where this artistic marvel is headed. The need for heavy exposition was evident, but broken up with promises of both action and intrigue by the bits of foreshadowing dropped in amongst them. All in all, the art alone would drive me to pick up the next issue, but the story leaves you wondering; in a career this damned, where did it all go wrong? Read Full Review

Alright, so let me say what I did like. Harrington's companion is a freakin treecat! I loved that idea and it gives personality to Harrington. Jung-Guen Yoon's art of the galaxy captured the immensity and vastness of space through the usages of colors that illuminated the unknown universe. So I dig the galaxy scenes and costumes but I will say that at times it looked a little too digital. For the most part that can be overlooked though in compared to the rest of the amazing artwork featured. Read Full Review

I haven't collected or read comics in years. I picked this up because I love David Weber's Honor Harrington novels and I wanted to see it visually. For me, DW's characters, battles and world building are believable and emotionally enjoyable. I had misgivings about how Top Cows story tellers and artists would portray these. Other than their Treecat's design I am really impressed with the how the story flows and the artists work gives life to the works I had only imagined. The shower rape/fight panel was mentioned by Critic Reviews as a minus for dehumanizing women and normalizing assault on females and then victimizing the rapist. Having read all of the novels and knowing both characters story I think I can understand how this portrayal of that event would detract from readers appreciation of this series. That part of the story shouldn't have taken two panels to say that Captain Young is a piece of @^*%. Unfortunately it seems to me the critics have only read and seen the comics version and I tell you that there is more to these two characters than the detractors and perhaps poor story boarding conveyed. This is not a story where only the good never die and always triumph and evil always perishes while never succeeding. It is not that kind of tale. It is Epic. I liked Tales of Honor's first issue and I believe you will too. more
